hi
i use 10w/30 oil in my au2 i6.Now a few mechanics have told me its too thin ,especially in perth summer.But one told me to use whats written on the oil filler cap,which is 10w/30.I got in touch with penrite and they told me its too thin as well and to use their hpr 10 ,which is actually a 10w/50.They said the higher second number the better.Now ive read the posts about what oils you guys are using and about valve clearances.I used castrol magnatec 10w/40 once and she rattled like buggery ,so i dropped it straight out.Now if 10w/30 was too thin to use in our summer ,why would ford australia recomend it.ive got 80,000 on her and change the oil every 5,000.cheers guys opinions appreciated.

10w30 is recommended by the factory for AU engines.

10w/40 100% synthetic but if you're way way up north switch to something higher during the hotter months.

i read that noisy and was very informative.But you ask different mechanics and they all have different opinions.Now the top man at penrite tells me its too thin,my mechanic tells me its too thin and to use 10w/40.Penrite told me that the oil goes thinner when in your engine than when its first in the bottle,so what does it thin down too,a 10w/20.?Now thats too thin for an aussie summer.ive been told by penrite that 10w/30 is the most popular and made grade of oil in the world.They base that grade on average climates,not on hot summers.

if ya had no troubles in the past, then just leave it.

are they talking mineral{regular}, semi- synthetic or full synthetic?.
if they mean it'll go thin that means its mineral oil & partial mineral/synthetic.
full synthetic tents to holds its viscosity longer.

just use 10w/30 full synthetic. thats why you switch over to slightly thicker grade {10w/40} during summer or next service before it, like I said on previous post.

I have been using Penrite for the past umpteen years, and have stuck to their recommendations without any problems, including motorcycles. As far as I am concerned, Penrite is an Aussie company, so they need support, and I reckon that they do the research for Australian conditions, whereas companies like Castrol etc. are global companies, so they come up with an average (sort of)

IMHO if Penrite says 10W/50, use it. :D

yeh ill give penrite a go creeture .All im basically getting at is ,why do some mechanics ive spoke to say that grade is too thin ,but ford has recommended it.I even rang the local ford service dealer about a service and asked what grade they were using and they said 15w/50.I said it recommends 10w/30 mate and he said its too thin.work that one out.

For what its worth I have been running 10W40 for a while without issue, last change I put in 10W30 and it is chewing the oil, 2 litres in 2000 k's. I am topping it up with 10W40 again.

unless you have are having drmama with the 10/30 or go to the track every second day.
leave it be with the current 10/30, 10/50 is far to thick for a standard au getting serviced every 5000k's no matter what some guy at penrite says.

that sounds like a more serious issue than the the difference between 10w30 and 10w40.


last change i went from penrite semi synthetic 15w60 to penrite sin (fully synthetic) 15w40. this was at 130,000 km. AFAIK after 3000km dont think its burnt any oil at all. revs a lot freerer now, maybe a tad noiser at redline, but its not rattling its tits off

shell helix ultra 5w-40 full synthetic.
