im gonna make a heat shield to mount on my lpg converter to protect it from radiant heat from the extractors
couple of ?'s what would be the best material to use - mild steel/aluminium/stainless steel polished or painted or some type of insulating material fixed on |

opto - is that shield insulated at all - that would get bloody hot wouldnt it?

Yeah I was told stainless conducts heat well, not recommended for heat shields.
Unless the stainess joint i spoke too were just lazy and didn't want to make me one..

thats what i figured - for a heat shield you would want a poor conductor of heat would'nt you?

Of course stainless steel will soak up some heat particularly if it is in contact with the heat source. I ran an Infra Red Raytek Temperature gun over the engine bay, the manifold near the head temps were as high as 160 degrees C and the extractors at around 80 to 120 degrees C, however, due to the air gap between the stainless steel heat shield, the temperature was constantly at around 60 to 70 Degrees C on th heat shield, in my opinion that is effective as the heat does not rise directly into the upper engine bay.
I have no vibration or noise If you feel that is not effective you may want another around the lpg heat exchanger.

acl make a special product for exhaust heat sheilds, comes as a sheet that you bend up to shape, don't know the cost.
for the converter just make it out off some steel sheeting, don't know which one, and make sure there is a gap between the converter and sheild, the air will act like insulation.

or you could paint the top side matt black & leave the side facing the headers shiny. that way you maintain the heat within the headers for scavenging. matt black is a great heat dissipater, you can loose as much as 5.C to 15.C. try the raytek on it.
