Recently put a stock cam back in and but still have a Vernier gear fitted, and was wondering is there any gains to be made advancing or retarding it..... or should i just leave it dialed in at "0" ?

hey, did you take your 977b out? why?! (just curious!)

i guess you could get a bit more top end with 1 or 2 degree of retard, however it would be pretty hard to guage without running it on a dyno before and after!

it depends how far out the cam is. production tolerance, chain and guide wear will all effect the cam timing.

i found the the old stock cam in my XR was out by 4 degrees,

find true TDC and remark the balancer then check the cam timing.

i took it out cause i wanted to take the car back to stock and recoup some costs as modding my car isnt a priority anymore, saving up for a small car for my missus is. However im already getting sick of the lack in power it has now and maybe come tax time i might go out and fit a 977b back in again, or maybe a custom cam.... time will tell :)

yeah i remember finding true TDC on the old slipped balancer i had, and after a new timing chain the cam gear mark at "0" degrees sat 5mm above the head. Ive got a new balancer now, but im still not sure whether to trust the mark.

I tried ringing a few places on how to dial in a stocko cam but nobody had an answer eg. how much lift at TDC

I know what you mean about the lift, unfortunately I cant help you with that however I have dialled in 2 cams and it seems to be 3 degrees is the sweetspot, keep in mind, the rollmaster Vernier gear, each mark is worth 2 degrees.

try an engine building shop, they should be abe to give you a formula to work out the correct dial in degrees

EF valve lift intake 12mm
valve lift exhuast 11.52mm

timming is intake opens at 16 BTDC closes 68 ABDC

...............exhause opens 62 BBDC closes 18 ATDC

EF XR6 valve lift same as GLI

timming is intake 'O' 14 BTDC 'C' 70 ABDC

.................exhaust 'O' 58 BBDC 'C' 22 ATDC

i'll try and dig out my photocopy of that setcion of the factory manual for you, but that what i had saved in one of my files on the pc

thanks, i thought the stock cam had less lift than .472", learn something new everyday i guess

So how much actual intake lift do i find at no.1 piston TDC?

This isnt a big deal i know, but i like tinkering with the car, and would like to dial it in, and see where it sits as opposed to leaving it sit 5mm above the head, or advancing it 2 degrees all for the sake of the cam gear mark being within 3mm above the head

cheers

you could bring the crank around to 16BTDC and then set the cam to 'just' open the intake valve and it will be close enough for stock cam

i advanced the stock cam 2 degrees and it goes great, but mind you at "0" degrees the cam gear mark sat 5mm above the head, like i mentioned... now it sits 3mm above.

Power kicks in sharply at 2300rpm, does that sound right for a stocko?

Tell you what though, it feels almost as good as when i had the 1636 fitted and it made 138kw with that, i wouldnt be surpised if it made 130rwkw with this stocko, is that possible?

yeah straight thru exhuast, intake, crow valve springs, rebuilt t5, new diff, machined head and AU gasket

I moved it one mark on the vernier, which i think is 1 degree, but 'opto' says the rollmasters are 2 degree increments?

Anyone clarify?

Yes it is 2 degree each line on a rollmaster gear.
