hey guys
My ac isn't working and i chucked the car on Ac machine at work and vac down AC system and it dected a leak and i pumped a bit of gas into the system to get a hiss from the Evaporator area so i think im just up for a Evaporator which only like $100 new part plus reciver dryer which is only $25 new. Id rather spend the money then cook when summer hits. So i was wondering if anyone replaced a Evaporator and were you able to replace it without removing the dash which is what i got a bad feeling i have to do. Thx Jason

AC evaporator core is inside your heater box which is behind the dash so its dash out. Prick of a job.
Should replace your heater core why your there.

it takes ages...many hours
also it aint easy to get at the nuts holding the box to the firewall and be very careful removing the heater hoses... also there is a high chance your airbag light will come on afterwards and not go away

yep i did it in my ea and it took about 7 hours..including a small lunch break lol
as above the dash needs to come out, disconect aircon lines heater hoses. you got to remove about 6 nuts from the engine bay side of the firewall. then there is a heap of screws holding the heater box together.. and i would also change the heater core while your there. and last dont forget to use some silicon to seal the heater box when you put it back together otherwise when you get the water drain off from the aircon it will leak onto your floor.. so yea its a b**ch of a job!! |

Bastard. I just found out i have to do this to the EB. Do you need to take the upper dash off with the EA/EB, or can you get away with just taking the glovebox etc off?

I have a wreck with gas in it, but it seems i would be foolhardy to use that evaporator rather than a new one, considering the labour and re-regas cost involved if it fails?

i thought id let you guys know i ordered new evaporator and reciver dryer off a ac shop on ebay and only costing me just under $150 and guys throwing in the seals for the tx valve.
so if i get it by the weekend ill try replacing the evaporator and while dash is out i can fix the million wiring problems that are behind there as well.

Who did you order it from, i previously looked on ebay but didn't see one?
Repco quoted me $173 just for the evaporator, and ford quoted $197.25.

i removed the dash when i got home and removed the airbox and it only took me 2 hrs but i has electric screw drill and all dash trim tools and experince of removing dashes. the amazing bit was both heater hoses cam off heater matrix real easly

Thanks for the update, i hadn't thought of using my electric drill to screw/unscrew things.
However, i'm thinking i might go genuine ford for the parts. If a non-genuine evaporator stuff's up that would be $100evaporator + $130regas +hours of labour down the drain. Since even the ford part obviously fails, a lower standard aftermarket part might be too dodgy. What was your impression of the quality of the one you got?
