Hey guys,
I have a question. If my leads were f**k would it cause my car to miss when i take off and also i can feel it missing real bad when im just cruisin at say 60 or 100k's, but when i put my foot down slightly it goes???. I was thinking leads/coil pack. However it doesnt miss when i floor it, it is sluggish though. Any help would be great guys. Cheers

Cheers could be leads, sparkies, coil pack......does the car jerk more or hesitate to launch when light footed? EDIT: if the car does jerk and hesitate it might not be the coil pack, sparkies or leads...could be fuel line related...try replacing the fuel filter if u haven't done so.

yeah it does jerk more than hesitate when taking off and when light footed. I have just replaced the fuel filter about a month ago. Iv'e got the iridium sparkies in but i havnt changed the leads since i put them in which was bout 10 months ago. I reckon its probably the leads and maybe the coil pack. Has any one had similar probs like this???

Change the rotor in the dissie as well and dissie cap they wear and get scale on them, also the carbon centre electrode breaks.
Plugs and leads as well fixed my EA that did the same thing |

He's got an AU series 2, no dissy, Coil pack. I would check your plugs and if OK the change your leads.

I'm having a similar sort of issue with my 4.0L EF. It was fine up until I ran some Nulon fuel system cleaner through it and now it hesitates from low rpm when taking off.
Has anyone else had this sort of thing happen with injector cleaner or other fuel additives? I'll see how it goes on a fresh tank of petrol.

I have heard that nulon stuff is very strong and actually can strip gunk of the tank wall and fuel pipes thus clooging your injectors further! try a new fuel filter also, incase it has trapped a heap of gunk that the fuel injector stuff stripped off the tank wall! |

You can test leads quickly and easily if you have a multimeter. Set multi to k Ohms (1000's Ohms). Each lead should be less than 1 k Ohm per inch of lead. But I would suggest that a lead is not servicable if it reads any more than 8-9 k Ohm regardless of length.
This is a good general test but the leads could still be breaking down under load (but not normally). If all leads were around 4-5 k Ohm I would be happy that they could not be the problem. If they were all around 7-8 k Ohm I would replace them on principle. I also ALWAYS check new leads. I once got some champion leads that were over 10 k Ohm brand new! cheers Scott

Thats what happens when you try save a few hundred bucks and get a 500,000km ex taxi.
Anyhow whats done is done. Just pay to get it done properly, dont do a bodgy job, or else you will be paying the professional and the donkey to fix it. Just pay the professional, get it done properly the first time.

What can happen is that the fuel system cleaners break down the gunk in the tank then the filter gets blocked. Best bet if you think you have a dirty fuel system is to treat with a strong cleaner. Run one tank through, then change the fuel filter.
That way everything is now 'clean'. Next time you run the cleaner (5000k's later) there should not be any gunk in the tank to block your filter.

You can test once again with a multimeter. You need to test the high and low windings of each coil (you have 3). You will need the specs from a gregories or some such to know what the resistances at certain pins should be. I can give the specs for an EF coil. 'Might' be the same.
cheers Scott
