hi all, when its really cold outside in the morning my car blows blue smoke till its warm and then it stops after about a km or so.. any advice as to what this could be? im leaning toward valve seals being worn but expanding to seal properly when the engine is warm.. am i on the right track? or is it something else?
is this hard/expensive to fix? it seems to be just after a really cold night is the only time it does this, startup during the day is fine but i assume its cos the engine has some heat in it still,it runs fine when its warm, advice please guys my car is a EB2 Ghia |

dumb question perhaps, but are you 100% sure it's not just condensation on a cold morning?

thats not that dumb of a question, i dont know much about these things but its a blueish kinda smoke i think, whereas condensation is white? i have been checking the oil level and it hasnt gone down at all so maybe it is, as its only on really really cold mornings so you could be right?
nonetheless would valve seal rejuvinator be a good idea? is there a definate way to tell?... thanks |

compression test will tell you if your losing comp. also allowing oil to bleed into the bore, may also be rings, leak down test will tell you if the rings are on the way out.

I would think that it's unlikely to be valve seals or guides unless they are completely shot. The smoke usually clears quite quickly. The engine will also blow smoke for a few seconds after extended idling. Because it only seems to happen on cold mornings I tend to think it's more condensation than anything else. But as posted a compression test won't hurt and if head or manifolds were off you could vacumn test the valves. applying vacumn to the ports should show wear or leakage around the guide and seal. Good luck with it mate

i'm voting condensation.
how many kms on the motor and what weight oil do you run in it?

im running Valvoline XLD premium which is 20w50, i changed the oil about 1000kms ago, the engine has done 266xxx kms
usually the smoke/condensation clears within aboout 500 m by the time i get to the end of the street and runs clean after that, im moving house this weekend which has a garage, the point being it might not get as cold as being outside in the night air, so it will be interesting to see if it is this! is there any way to avoid condensation or is that a silly question? |

does the steam/smoke smell like burnt coolant or smells like burnt oil?
