Yes they are supposed to be open if the cam and rocker gear is still attatched, but do NOT put the cylinder head face down whilst the valves are open or you may damage them.

Just make sure when you put the head back on, that everything is set at TDC...so head at TDC (camshaft sprocket notch level with head) and balancer is aligned with TDC mark on the casing. When moving the crank, make sure th chain doesn't get caught and break some guides if it's all still attached.

The rubber grommet is not part of the PVC. Some people say to spray Hylomar on it and some don't. Just personal preference really, however make sure both surfaces of the head and block are REALLY clean...so no oils/dust/grit etc. I used Kerosene to remove all the oily stuff and then some acetone on a rag to dry it up. Worked a treat.

I dont use kero to clean the surfaces, I use Brakleen or shellite in a squirtey bottle as these dont leave a residue (supposedly). As for the head - cam - rockers, what ever you decide to do re cam selection, just make sure you keep your rockers and heads paired up as they were. Also, If you have to turn the crank, make sure the intermediate shaft is turning too. Try not to jump teeth down there cos if you do your day will get longer... Best to set it all up at TDC before you pull it all apart.
