I have an au bottom end that has already had the sump cut to fit e series though when I removed the head the oil smelt burnt, so I'm thinking of giving it a freshen up with new rings, bearings, welsh plugs and seals but have a few queries as I haven't played with a bottom end before. Ill be using a Steel multi layer head gasket and my ef T head that ill be getting skimmed.
1. Would it be worth while to buy new pistons or just replace the rings? Also what brands/sizes should I get. 2. What brand/size bearings do I buy?? I have looked at the website http://precisionintl.com/Default.aspx though its all confusing with the different brands and so many to choose from. I have been told to use these pistons http://precisionintl.com/Part.aspx?ID=59638&EID=999 though I don't see the need to spend that much if its not needed but will if they are, it shows what rings to use with these pistons so if I was to get them I'd get it all together. But that leads me to what main an rod bearings to buy? Any info or links would be greatly appreciated.

Measure the bore, and measure the pistons.
If the engine has been overheated, the skirts on the pistons may have colapsed.

Got a mate who is going to help with the measuring of it all, he's done it a fair few times so will be good to have it done right and learn at the same time.
Going to stip the block measure it all and crack test it than replace what's needed and go from there.

Hi,
Depending on age and condition, I would do the rings and the bearings / pistons only if they need it. You will have to choose between a full rebuild, or a freshen up as once you start replacing things that don't need it the price will keep going up. Most machine shops will sell parts, and measure / things to help you. Is it going to be a Freshen up or rebuild ? ( you did say freshen up, but we have all started at that ! ) Once you start it is hard to stop and the price you thought it would be keeps going. I will get it balanced and the Conrods peened, head ported and a new heavy duty clutch, a new Cam..... That is how it starts and the budget rebuild get bigger than Ben Hur.

you should also take into consideration of what your going to use the
engine for like just normal driving or are you going go down the forced induction road |

I'd like to eventually go forced induction though I have the V8 in the shed that will eventually get a rebuild so for now im just going to freshen up this motor up and replace only what's needed.
Hoping to take it to my mates this week and start breaking it down and find out what work needs to be done.
