This question has probably been asked many times before but i'm going to ask anyway
I was thinking, can you bolt an e series oil pump and sump onto an AU block? This would make conversion so much simpler

Sorry but i would say no. Very different,and i think the sump ties the bottom of the au motor together.

Yeah pretty sure the sumps are different, thats why when people do the conversion they either have to modify the sump to fit the e-series k frame or modify the k frame to fit around the sump.
Wish it was as easy as swapping the sump over to e series though. Wouldnt have to stuff around with cutting and welding to get it to fit |

iv read you only have to grind the fins off the au sump to fit e series k frame.. is that it?

Apparently its abit more cutting of the sump, about 2cm from a picture ive seen

Yeah you have to remove alot of alloy,i have done it both ways first time the sump,and second time i cut the K frame, i would cut the K frame its safer and easier you should find some thing on this site about how to mod the K frame.

We grinded the sump flat and it still touched the k-frame, only just though but enough to vibrate the whole car. We ended up modifying the k-frame. I would just modify the k-frame first time around while the motor is out, just in case. |

I modified the sump.
No problemo's when it comes to loopholes with insurance! No way would I cut a 'structural' part of a car. Technically its safer to mod the sump and faster.

Maybe mounts being worn or being to new may change how the motor sits, cutting the k frame could harm your insurence, but you could always remove that front cross bar altogether and just add the new one wont look suss then, just at a guess i think that bar you have to cut is more for stability between were the lower control arms go, rather then a structural part,kinda stops one side moving different to the other. Its going to be one of those things CONS and PROS! everyones rite on this one.

Does anyone have pictures of a modified AU sump and also get a standard AU sump to compare how much it needs to be modified.
Hands down ill do the sump as its safty ur tampering with when modifing the K Frame which im not willing to do.

You will end up just grinding the it flat just to be sure.Just from these posts alone every car seems to be different so your best bet is to grind the fins all the way down.

well in both the cars ive put au engines in (ea and ed) ive cut and welded the k frame..
ive had no issues with suspension geometry,roadworthy checks or insurance.. after i did the first one i took it to an engineer friend and he laughed and said not to worry about it.. as long as it was welded there would be no issues.. he actually said that getting an engineer certificate for a small weld could actually cause more harm than good in regards to registration and insurance..not to mention the cost of the engineer certificate... it may be a little different with ef/el as more needs to be cut and welded.. also an added bonus with cutting the k frame is you can also fit a ba engine without anymore modifications.. |
