hi guys, after getting frustrated trying to remove the top starter top bolt I thought i would try a mod. I drilled a hole through the firewall just big enough to fit a 3/8 drive 1/2# socket and extension through it and made an easy access point for the bolt. ill drill out the thread on the bellhousing and maybe make up a plate to the head of a long bolt that will stay in place when you turn the nut from the firewall side. (the bolt will then be reversed). I know this sounds bodgy and may attract some criticism but too bad, I can put a grommet over the hole and can use it again in the future.
I tried doing what some guys had said on here like: many extensions, swivels wrapped in tape, etc etc. even cut 2 ringys down to try to fit in the limited space. all had no success. maybe due to the ute having LPG theres more rubbish to get around. either way i think this will make things easier... I think the clutch kit will arrive tomorrow so ill post pics of the plate (bolt mod) etc tomorrow night, and let yas know if it helped... cheers!

good idea bro, but I reckon it wouldve been harder to drill that hole in the right spot than persevering getting that last bolt out, I have had no issues removing my starter motor out of my AU2 wagon before.

I didn't think that bolt was difficult to get out. definitely doesn't warrant drilling holes. Just go and buy a stubby rachet spanner, not that it's needed.

Ratchet 13mm spanner is whats needed.
My hands are like hunks of meat and I done the one in my father in laws old AU ute without too much hassle. Yeah its a C*** of a job but how often do you plan on pulling the starter motor out?

yeah i tried the stubby ratchet spanner and i couldnt get it in there. usually I dont have a problem getting into tight spots but this one seems extra cluttered around the engine mount/coil area for some reason, particularly one metal pipe that kept getting in the way. I even tried half a dozen different length 3/8 extensions. in the end i used a 3/8, 4" (approx) extension, swivel and a ratchet (the type where you turn the handle to drive the socket). this ratchet was a God-send as I could only lever the ratchet about 5mm at a time... being able to twist it made it heaps easier (until the bolt was nearly out, at that stage the ratchet head was hard up against the coil)...
the ring gears a bit worn so im half expecting to have to change it too in the future. thats why I'm looking at an easy option next time around. and I'm not too concerned about holes here and there as shes a work ute anyway... clutch kit should be here tomorrow.... hopefully it will be a quick job fitting it. |

mate that bolt is not hard to do, i dont know why everyone goes on about it. you can do it with a ratchet spanner or 3/8 drive socket and a couple of short extensions and a wobble joint

i aggree, its not hard enough to warrant drilling a hole in the firewall, its no harder than the 2 top bellhousing bolts....

1/4 inch ratchet and extensions... Do the bottom bolt first, then the top.

I'm another who doesn't find it too difficult - what you can do though with that existing hole is take it out a bit bigger, and fit a sealing grommet - the E series wagons have a good one for that in the rear floor for access to the rear bumper mounting bolts.

I didn't think it was that hard. It was easier to do back up with the BA starter though. Much smaller.
It's one of those things that everyone thinks is hard, but really isn't, like taking the dash out or changing a timing belt.

This is a awesome idea im so lazy got a starter motor to do in my EA but i tried numerous sockets as above and no luck
ive done a starter motor a few times in a EF and twice in a AU and had not to much problem sure it took a good 10min to get the top bolt out but easy is there any secret with the EAs |

F that , the thing is huge, i got a BA starter for the EA just need to install original one is still good Dam i just assumed ahh the old E series ones where just slightly bigger but its like huge |
