As the title says I'm wondering about the au 6' reliability, I'm looking into buying a manual au ute. It has 250xxx khs on the clock. I would suspect clutch would need doing but I'm more concerned about the motor.
There are also automatics with 170xxx-180xxx khs, would I be better off getting a auto? Cheers, Fullyforded I know similar questions have been asked but there not exactly what I'm after.

it's probably better going for lower k's regardless of auto or manual 170 000km is a LOT better than 250 000km I personally believe a lot can happen to a car within that km bracket depending on the how previous owner has treated it. After 180 000km cars start needing more than fluids and filters to run well.
If it's got discoloured fluids/faded coolant tank and looks a bit rough in general steer clear. You want bright green coolant and a clean car. Important things like 1 owner, original books/full service history/both sets of keys/glovebox key etc are all good signs of a good buy, as does good tyres no leaks/greasy k frame and overall cleanliness. For 250 000km you'd want to get receipts from him to make the the shocks, exhaust, brakes, ignition, o2 and other relative sensors have all been renewed at some point in the cars life and the transmission and diff have been serviced, same with the brake and power steering fluid. If you get a car with 170 000k's and these fluids are all still original from factory (which they are in almost every case) then it's much much better than getting one with 250 000k's because most these fluids really start letting go around 180 000k's. You want to check the bushes and suspension in general for knocks and noises, the smoothness/quietness of the gearbox/motor |

any car that is looked after will do good kms!
the au i6 is and most of the ford i6 are good for well over 500,000 have seen a fair few taxis crack 1mil +kms and going strong, sure they have a diff and a few g/boxes  IMHO the au 6 is a damn good car and will serve you well i thrashed the s**t out my auxr6hp auto and was still pulling like a freight train at 320,00kms my lower km auxr6 hp manual is slower and uses more fuel! green coolant is not a sign a looked after car. i can make any car have green coolant in 15 mins alot of cars now run red coolant too! nothing wrong with getting a falcon 6 with 250kms on it, as said if u can get the service history awesome if not get it cheap and change/fix what is needed

The au 6 is believed to be the better 6 cyl from the falcon.
250.000kms is nothing on a well looked after falcon. Most cars have 0 service history with them and you take a gamble. Best thing you can do is just have a general look over everything and do a full service when you buy the car so at least you can start fresh.

I looked at one last night, it had pure water in the radiator buggered interior stuffed power steering pump and rack dirty as f**k oil........ All for a premium price! He said he's son had it thrashed the f**k outa it and wants to sell it, straya C***? More like perth C***!!
I'm gonna have a look at one tonight hopefully. I don't mind it not having service history and a few small problems < that's bargaining ammo!

Well I ended up buying one! It was at a cheaper price because it had some small faults. One of the faults it had is the power steering pump sounds like a supercharger! I was looking on eBay for a replacement pump and found a pump called drivetech. There new power steering pumps. Has anyone heard anything about this brand?

After I put it in ill pull the old one apart, wouldn't mind seeing how they work.

You'll have to flush the system.....there may be contaminents in the system....and the rack may fail too, in the not too distant future.

My Falcon had a inline filter on the power steering pump. Didn't seem to harm the operation of the pump/steering so could be worth fitting.

My EL 4 litre engine has done 405,000km's without missing a beat.
Very strong engine. Still uses 8L/100km on the freeway, and 13L/100k or so in the city. (14L max) |
