hate to break it to you but the au engine and head is the best for reliabillity, sounds like yours has been abused or miss treated most its life..
there are au engines out there with huge high kms on them.. ill go as far as saying that the au engine is even better than the ba engine for reliabillity and longevity.. unfortunatly no reall aftermarket heads avaiable, to say its s**t coz its alloy is silly, they have all been alloy heads since the late 1980's and the ba's head is alloy aswell, so your s**t out of luck..lol |

I too would like to know why the head is s**t. Considering The AU has been the least trouble with head / head gasket issues.

it's probably shyte because he read it in a forum...
Attachment: +1 for au being the best head produced. some people from the school of old seem to think that an ally head on an iron block isn't a good idea because of the different thermal expansion and contraction rates. In reality, it's not a problem for millions of other manufacturers either.

If the OP wants a 6 cylinder Falcon that doesn't have a alloy head then he's going to have to get a XD or earlier.
Personally, I see nothing wrong with the alloy heads. Sure the alloy head heats up and cools down at different temps to the block but thats the beauty of the AU MLS head gasket. If the cooling system is kept in good condition with only quality coolants being used and demineralised water then I can't see why the head would be troublesome.

Too much like hard work not being able to use tap/rain/dam water. de-mineralised water is actually bad for aluminium radiators, which au's have. I can't imagine it being much different for heads either not that I have any evidence. Mines been replaced with a copper core with pressed copper tanks. Easier to fix & more reliable imho. That with nulon coolant and royal purple ice appears to make the ultimate cooling system, never changes from 5degree mornings to 45degree days, always consistent. Although I've purchased an el head before that had too much glycol and it seemed to work like extrusion honing without the consistency.

That Royal Purple Ice, Is it available at places like Supercheap and Autobarn? I might get some for my 5.0 AU as it still has it's original aluminium radiator (Which is still in excellent condition).
