i took the old povo extaxi au into the gas mob to get a service done, and the mechanic was telling the au gas only motors were a little tricked up from there petrol brothers, he was saying they have a better wieghted crank and forged rods, was just wondering if this is true or is he justing getting confused with the later engines?, the reason for asking is i have another of those engines sitting in the shed, and if was true about the forged rods an on it would make a great base to start from to build a strong motor with big boost , to replace the turboed motor in my xp,

AU Gas motors had better rods, not sure about forgies, but certainly better, good base for a boosted motor.
Your mechanic is right about that.

gas motors didn't get better rods until part way through BA.

so what ya saying is the only difference is the green tappet cover and the manifold having the injectors ports blocked off?

there is nothing in the engine that would make it more suitable as a performance engine then any other AU engine.
If you wanted to stay with factory gear the late ED to early EL rods are the strongest, you know these rod buy them having TRW on the side of the beam as well as the tell tale wide forging flash. The AU crank has larger MAIN bearings and the main caps are cross bolted through the sump. At the end of the day, the cost of new spool rods is so cheap that you wouldn't bother with stock stuff. The AU engine has proven its self to hold hold 300kw WITH A GOOD TUNE, so anything under that just use low KM used engines with good oil, good cooling, and good tune. Over that and you will need to build a good engine. |
