just clean the block and get the head skimmed (5 thou) put the AU head gasket (MLS) and NEW head bolts (AU) no glue but make sure the block and head are clean (wipe with metho or thinners) and your right

For sealant use Hylomar

you should use some sort of gasket glue when doing the head,
personally i use hylomar, really really good will stay sticky the whole time its on the car, been recommended my a few car mags from what ive seen
should be able to get it from most car places, all you gotta do is spray it on the gasket leave it sit for a bit to let the glue get tacky then put it on carefully making sure the head and the block are as clean as you can get them.
the glue doesnt hold the gasket in place as such it creates a better seal and expands when the block and the head expand.

AU headgaskets are about half the thickness of EF (all E series) headgaskets, and are MLS (Multi Layer Steel) rather than the older composite type which is prone to blowout.

As the AU is thinner it will raise compression. If this is for your turbo EF, you can get 1mm and 1.6mm copper gaskets from ACL, I believe as well as others, which will drop your compression down a fair whack. Failing that you can always double up the AU gaskets.

Standard is 40 thou I believe, AU is 20 thou (or 17, not 100% as I havent measured one).

there is no need to use any sealer at all, both with the AU gasket and the PRE AU gasket.

I know it's said no sealant is required.. but I can't help the nagging feeling that one would help.
That gasket is going to slide a bit (I often flog my own engines to pink-hot header temps, and 'customer' cars get similar treatment) under thermal expansion and contraction.

I've always used copper spray for the fabric gaskets (VHT Copper etc) but Hylomar is also popular.

Anyone used copper spray with a steel gasket? Any reports or observations?

I used Hylomar myself, mainly for all the other gaskets during the rebuild, but I also put it on the head gasket, more because I had enough left in the can to do it, not for any other reason.

Head gaskets I have done in the past used no glue or bondig agent and had no issues with them.

each to his own on this one. As mentioned, no glue is required, use it if you really want.

Dave

I've never used hylomar or any other glue/sealant on a head gaskit, never had any issues with them blowing out earlier than expected (falcon I6 for example). I have an engine here, a little Suzuki F8b that someone used red gaskit goo on the head gaskit, and within about 20secs of firing the new engine up, it was leaking coolant into the oil & cylinders. I've checked the surface of the block & head, checked for block cracks & none were found. It was sold to me cheap, with a suspected cracked block, which i didn't really care about, i wanted all the other bits like conrods & so on as spares. Block was checked & not cracked....

Only conclusion i can draw is the failure was due to the gaskit goo used. There is signs of where the gaskit goo let go near the cylinder walls & coolant galleries.

Cheers

I never use anything on the deck either.

However when I was working at a mechanical workshop, I was 'told' to use form-a-gasket No.2 on the deck and head.

We never saw one come back.

I guess it doesn't hurt to use 'something'.

Yet, when I do a Car, I make sure both surfaces are true and there is no need to use a 'buffer'

Hence why if you blow a head gaskit on a I6 alloy head ford, it doesn't hurt to have it hardness tested & surfaced before placing it back on, making sure it's flat & hard enough, and use a straight edge on the block to check it out too...

Cheers

its more of a personal opinion if you feel sealant will help use it if u dont then dont bother
dont think anyones done tests to see the difference between sealant and no sealant

I make sure all surfaces are flat & clean, then use ACL Hylomar on both sides of the gasket.
Never had a problem. In the pic, that is not a new engine, its the old engine, cleaned up for installation of the head.
I scrub the side of the engine block, and repaint it black, so it does look like its all good again, no coolant stains.
