All E/A series head bolts are Torque to Yield bolts...
They are NOT supposed to be torqued to their full tension.. I have the instructions for my mls gasket here somewhere.... here we go.. It says to torque all head bolts to 30mn/23lbf.ft and then turn them a further 120 degrees to reach full tension. From memory the instructions for the bolts I had said 130 degrees so I went with that instead but you get the idea. I torqued all the bolts to 30mn and then marked the heads of the bolts in line with the block.... then used the protractor to get 130 degrees and did it... (look at the head bolts in the photo) since mine worked without block decking and yours failed with it.... I'm inclined to think my way was better. As for the radiator treatment.. don't use the flaky stuff as it's cr@p.. get the one I mentioned before with the tiny metallic bronze metal balls in it. It won't clog up your radiator and it lasts for years... Last edited by frankieh on Tue Aug 04, 2009 4:31 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

Don't forget the Blue Hydromar spray... that stuff is magic.. supercheap sells it.
my head was corroded and pitted in some areas and I only half expected it to work but it's been flawless...... |

You didn't touch the face of the gasket with greasy fingers did you?

I posted this in "fiend's" garage thread, but think it's more appropriate in here...
All this talk about tourque has got me paranoid.. without checking what the missus was looking at, I somehow got the idea that 60ft pounds was about 40nm... So we torqued up my headbolts on my ED head fitted with AU gasket to 60ft/pounds + 0 degrees so far... Have we fk'd something up.. now know that as confirmed on http://www.thetoolhut.com/Torque-Conver ... etric.html 30nm is 23ft pounds, or 40nm is 30ft pounds. Please tell me I don't have to get new bolts and another AU gasket.. |

According to this site:
http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/torque 60 ft lbs is 81.35 nm.... tiny bit to far dude. |

Another tip
dont polish the block the block and head are suposed to have a degree of roughness to help hold the gasket, if it is too smoothe it can move and leak |

the gaskit kit comes with the head bolt torque settings (if it doesnt then call ford and find out or consult a manual)
safest bet is to remove head and fit another gaskit and NEW head bolts torqued correctly...

Should I invest in another gasket and bolts? whoops lol...... when i helped PIMP_LTD fit his AU gasket with the torque+degrees method we checked one of the headbolts to see what torque they ended up with and it was 80nm |
