Hi all,
I have just put an AU head on a mate's EF Falcon and it has a shocking lash adjuster rattle. We thought that perhaps the adjusters were buggered, so we replaced them all with new ones. Ran it for a while (so they could adjust), but it is still as rattly as hell. Can the EF cam and rocker gear run OK on an AU head? Cheers, |

flick jaysen a pm he has the answer, I think the spacing changed slightly on the 2 different cams, has your shimmed the adjusters?

Cheers, you put the EF rocker gear and cam on the au head? if so u f**k up...sdorry if it is harsh but it is true the AU's run a different rocker ratio and Base circle of the cam than all other models basically the cam is not gettign the correct lift and is most likely moving about in the journals best bet is to take the EF gear out and replace with AU gear

I am assuming it is a AU head, it is marked 96DA XXXXXX (cant remember the rest). If I recall EF/EL heads are marked 94AA. As for Shims, what is the go there? |

If the head is a 96DAxxxxx its a hybrid EL head, in other words its a AU head, and needs AU cam and AU rockergear. As Frank said, the rockergear might bolt on, but I dont think it will line up with the valves properly for starters, let alone whatever problems it will cause with the cam.
True AU heads were marked with the new WRxxxx whatever part numbers. 94AA and 94AB heads are for EF, and some found their ways onto very early EL's. 95AA and 95AB were fitted to EL's, until the hybrid head found its way into production. The 94Ax and 95Ax heads all use the same cams and rockergear. And just because you got it from a Ford wrecker, it doesnt mean much. I have found that very few wreckers know about the "hybrid" I6 Ford released. Even Ford spare parts have little knowledge of these engines. So in reality, if you wanted an EF head, he should have provided you with a 94AA/B head. But I'm guessing he did the "its from an EL, it will work". |

As for Shims, what is the go there? ahh ok sorry to be hars was a wee bit dwank last ntie again... dont trust wreckers! like arm79 said not many ppl know the differences in the head between EL/au and the hybrids. shims will not work, best bet is to source AU rocker gear and cam or a complete head

I was assuming there was some difference, the car had no rattle like that until the head was done (just spat water everywhere). It is running the EF cam and rocker gear (the wreckers did not supply these with the head). I think what I will do is ring the wreckers, tell them what they can do with their head and demand that we are refunded for the VRS kit that is now fu*ked because of their stupidity. When you ask for an EF head, you should be given one that works on an EF. Thanks! Nathan |

see if they'll give the rockergear as the au head flows alot better than the ef. i'm not sure if u will need anythin else to run it properly.

AU heads on EF/EL motors suck a**... Big time... Dont make as much torque off the line. Higher RPM is excellent compared to an EF/EL head, but dont really use that area of the rev range when your taking off. Kind of explains why my 96DT head is being replaced with a 94DT head when I get my a** into gear. |

Just Fords are sending me the correct rocker gear and cam for the car so we will see what happens. I am not all too concerned about it as long as it runs properly, is quiet and reliable - the car is being replaced shortly anyway.

Of course the cam and rockers are, but the AU swap has been done heaps of time and this is the first I have heard of this. One particular head shop uses virgin AU castings for all his E series reconditioned heads. He just bores out the valve guides for the valve conversion. So I think this needs to be looked into a bit further??????? |
