Had some major issues with the cab today. It all seemed fine untill I turned the aircon on in some heavy traffic and watched the temp guage rose till it got in between the M and the A. I've never seen it get that high before. Usually it gets between the N and the O and jost sits there but this freaked me out. Also when it got that warm the box just kept on going into limp home mode and doing all sorts of weird things like holding a certain gear and shuddering really bad and clunking and slipping through the gears. The engine would backfire as whel every time i took off. Once I turned the aircon off and the ambient temp got cooler it all seemed to go back to normal but boy did it freak me out. i seriously thought the poor old cab wouldn't make it through the day.

About time something was going up quicker than the cab fair!! Definatly sounds serious though. Good time to get radiator flushed before summer realy hits.

I was thinking it could be an aircon prob cause it only does in when the aircon is on. I can really feel the engine load up with the aircon on.

You will proberly find it a fan problem. One of your thermo fans has died, while the aircon is off one fan will keep the engine temp normal all day in 40degree heat but once you turn the a/con on and the second fan doesn't cut in the temp soars.Quite common I have replaced 4 in 5yrs.

My EB ran on L (The last letter before the RED) all the way to canberra and back on the weekend.
Took the radiator out on monday and had it serviced/flushed/etc and voila - no more heating problems. The car sat on N (just up from BLUE) in traffic today, 41 degrees!

I thought the AU had smarts to shut down cylinders to stop heat build up if something went wrong?

Good to see that you fixed the prob. Did ya have any other troubles with it other than that as this is its first long run isnt it? Quote: I thought the AU had smarts to shut down cylinders to stop heat build up if something went wrong? They do but it only cuts in when the motor gets to the extreem, all though its nerve racking to see that temp dial go up towards the red, unless it hits the red and stays there it shouldnt do any harm to your car.

Same things happening in my car with the air con on..., I just thought I need to be getting more colder air, cos the air that the air con was getting was too hot?
but yeah, definately scary s**t when that happens. Cheers

How long should a radiator last before needing cleaning ?
I have a brand new water pump and had a new radiator fitted 2 years ago so I'm thinking mine should be fine... My car has been running really hot since the new engine went in. A few times now in 30 degree heat it's come up to the bottom of the O in NORMAL (N being the closest to red) and even with the leaking head previously it didn't get that hot. The temperature is funny though, it goes up and down and you can watch it drop back to M almost as fast as the speedo needle moving up!

The first thing I did before dropping my new ITS engine in was a radiator reco. Even on hot days, after alot of hard work the temp doesnt get past 1/4 The radiator in my EB was last done in Jul 2001 apparently. When we took it out, all the water was s**t and brown, and was rather sludged up. I'd say every couple of years. It only cost me $80 - money very well spent.

Yeah probably find like others have said that the thermo fans maybe playing up. I sometimes find my EL will sometimes climb up to M then Go back to the "Normal "temp range once the thermos Kick in.

Just remember the coolant temp is just that.
COOLANT temp! the temp to be worried about is Cyl Head temp. slight variations are caused by the Air flowing through the radiator. High coolant temp may not mean that the Engine temp is high, and vice versa, depending on problems. Correct me if I'm wrong but the AU I think changed the temp sensor to read from the Cyl head, not the coolant, correct? |
