(i know there are a LOT of threads on this subject but i couldnt find them)
my headgasket needs replacing so im gonna kill two birds with one stone and replace my motor with a low KMS AU motor (retaining my manifolds and accessories)

so i need to use:

all ED accessories and balancer
ED timing cover
ED waterpump
ED thermostate housing
ED dizzy
And my complete loom

remove one rib off the AU cast sump so it clears my K-frame

im also planning on getting the matching AU transmission my questions then are:

can i fit a dipstick to it?
does it have the place for the speedo transducer (or was it with the BA's that they dissapeared?) if it doesnt, the output housing of any EA-EL 4SPD transmission will fit wont it?
And does the AU transmission loom plug into the existing ED loom.

Will attempt to take lots of pictures and write up a doco on it for anyone who is interested.


AND while the car is off the road im thinking of pulling the head off and getting some work done on it (about $500 to spend) im thinking that would cover a Cam and have the compression bumped up a bit (whats the highest that i can go to while still being able to run normal unleaded?)

Going like a rocket thanks :D Wasnt the wolf that was playing up it turned out to be ignition related... replaced the whole iggy system and its fine again, and with more kws

i know this may sound like a silly question, but how much of this "au" motor are you using if you are going to retian all that ED stuff?
just the head or what?

Head and bottom end, going to a full serpentine and BBM setup will cost a fair bit extra, and all my ancillaries are in good condition. im using an AU motor specificly since the bottom end is stronger and it revs a bit more freely and higher

bottom end including block? why not change to the Au water pump then? wouldnt it be easier to do that and get a/c and p/s off the AU aswell?
I could be wrong just wondering

I saw one in a wreckers a few weeks ago for 600... the guy reckoned it had 80 000 kays and it looked pretty clean. Had all the pumps and gear on it.
Jose, why arnt you using the serp' belt gear?

"bottom end" is the block (including crank,rods,pistons etc) im not going to the AU ancillary setup due to cost, im looking at $500 more for A/C, alternator, P/S, (plus then id need a BBM and intake piping)

so im retaining all my ED ancillaries, i see most of the benifit of the AU in the stronger bottom end and lighter valvetrian

i see, cost is a big factor in a lot of things. that makes sense then. So all the ed stuff will bolt on fine then obviously?

Ah cool, should be a good motor, isnt there a bit of modding to be done? I saw a thread on FF and there were some mods to be done... cant remember what though

most the bits that have to be changed are just bolt on items, its the sump clearance thats an issue, either you have to modify the Kframe OR remove one of the ribs on the sump (the first one from the front i think).

This is why i posted this so if i missed something someone could pull me up on it.

On fitting the AU tranny, I dunno whether it's worth it.
Unless you're getting the tranny dirtcheap, or your current one is faaarked, it would be more trouble then it's worth to fit a dipstick to it I imagine.
You could spend the cost of an AU trans on tricking up your existing E-Series Trans.
Off topic, how many headgaskets have you gone through?!?

my current transmission has done a LOT im KM's so its going to need a rebuild soon anyway (and i have to drive carefully so i dont kill it any quicker)

this is the cars first headgasket (that i know of)
