Hi,
I have just finished an AU 1 into EF motor swap, and I just took her for a drive, feels very nice, except an awful ping under load. I really want to open it up but the pinging is painfull.
Where do I start?
I used EF top of manifold, all EF sensors except temp and crank angle sensor. Its giving me the s**t cos its not my car anymore and I just want to get it out of my driveway.

It also idles a little high and hangs on the revs.

Thanks,
Jas.

3 months at most, with less than a 1/4, you could be right... Ill try some new fuel tomorrow, just thought maybe someone else has had this problem.

3 months is wayyyy to long for petrol to be in there. Drain it and put some 95 or 98 in there.

what plugs are you using??

if your using ngk bpr5ey= std plug
try switching to a cooler plug. like ngk ZGR6B-11. cooler xr6 plug.

i did this to the au engine in my ea as it was pinging under load and its much better. and with the use of premium and the cooler plug.
it doesnt ping any more..

I took it for another rap today. Pinged a lot less, but still under WOT it pings a bit. Put half a tank of fuel in and its even better but still pings a bit.
I'll try the plugs, I noticed when I had a couple out that they have a HUGE gap and a strange looking center electrode that tapers off to flat topped point kinda looks like this: ]>- _| This end is closest to piston.

they look like iridium plugs(by your discription) should be gapped to 1.1mm
if they are they are about $18 each and they CAN last up 100,000 kms
great plug!. but you still might need a cooler one.
are they ngk ones ??

i just fitted ngk iridium plugs BPR6EIX-11 these are 1 heat range cooler than the std iridium. PBR5EIX-11.

hope this helps

Not sure, Ive just given the car to my workmate to use, just told him to back off if he hears pinging, only seemed to be under WOT below 3000rpm. The gap was WAY bigger than 1.1, so I'll check it out tomorrow at work and see how that goes. The plug looks like this Image which is iridium (just googled them).
Thanks and I'll let you know how we go.

Checked the plugs they are iridium and are f**k.
Gap was about 2mm so closed them up to 1.1mm and put them back for now. (No $$$)
Pinging has almost gone away so new colder plugs are in order, and also a handmade Idle Speed Control gasket with a smaller hole so it doesn't idle so high. I must say when it hammers along, and talk about REV!

I should do a pictorial Haha.

Thanks to everyone who has helped along the way, its been my first engine remove and replace and a handy learning experience for when the XW gets an injected 347 stroker
