I went for a spin in a 2001 AU XR6 with IRS and the owner insisted that its a better setup and handles better than BA/BF's.
Fact or fiction? |

??? Good question.
I've been in both an AU IRS and BA IRS and I would have to say that the AU did feel better (could also have been attributed to their better steering feel). Interesting to see what others think. |

Agree But I reckon it is personal preference. I prefer the solid rear axle as against the irs but that is simply (I think) because I learnt to drive with a solid axle.

The AU IRS is good, but its so damn heavy. The weight of the setup alone is enough to put me off.

70 or 80kg, cant remember which figure.
I think the AU IRS is technically a better design than the BA item, but is physically bigger and alot more expensive to produce, which is why it didn't make it into the BA. Whereas the BA IRS is smaller and cheaper to make, and just as effective. Both of which are an infinitely better design than the pre-VE IRS |

I thought it was the otherway around, the AU IRS was reasonably straightfoward and effective, and the BA setup was the heavy bastard.

Nope... The BA rear end weighs a far bit less than AU one. 20 to 25kg from memory.
Go have a look at the weight difference between an AU XR6-HP and an XR6-VCT. Only major difference being the IRS. |

Nothing beats the BA Fireblade suspension.
What did the AU IRS come in. Wasnt it the XR6's and XR8's and T series?

I would half listen to your comments if you actually used the correct name for the BA IRS.
IRS was standard in AU XR6-VCT's, Ghias, Fairlanes and LTD's and optional in al else except for the XR6-HP's, wagons and utes. |
