Hi guys have a series 1 AU falcon I picked up for free, problem is its only running on 4 cylinders, not firing on # 1 and 6.
have changed the leads still the same, Picked up a second hand coil and replaced still the same, Im thinking it would be very unlucky to pick up a another coil with the same bank of 2 not working. Got the trusty Fluke meter out to find each Bank of 2 had the same resistance across them, around 75K ohm on both coil packs. ( each bank of 2 ) Im really thinking now it could be upstream of the coil pack like what ever controlls the signal to generate to the coil. I gave all the factory falcon manuals back to my Father So have no schematics of the electrical system to even start from Also is the series 1 au OBD 2 compliant as I plugged in a tester to extract coded but would not talk to it. Any help would be apriciated, Dont want to spend any money on this car until I can get the engine running properly and establish if its worth fixing this car or wrecking.

Coil Pack is dead. Batch fire with following 1 & 6, 2 & 5, 3 & 4. Replace your coil pack.

Ford implemented their own variant of OBDII for the Aussie Falcons, but it's not the standard OBD protocol, apparently.
Does sound unlikely to be coilpack if it was replaced with no change and resistance is consistent across the coils. The ECU (passenger side footwell, behind the kick panel) signal's the coilpack to fire, so it could be the ECU. But I would check the wiring from coilpack to ECU for continuity first. The ECU pinouts will be on Fordmods somewhere. Have a search for them.

Did you replace your plugs? Even if you dont want to buy new ones, swap plugs 1 &6 with 2 & 5 or 3 &4, if it changes the missfire pattern, its your spark plugs.
If that doesnt work you can try borrow a ecu to put in and try., But i honestly reckon its the coil pack. So i recommend replacing the coil pack, if it does not solve the problem, yes its a $70 loss but you can always resell the coil pack to a friend or whatever. You will atleast get 3/4 of your coin back.

The spark plugs are new, the previous owner changed them out hoping it would fix the problem but had no luck.
I might check some some more wiring around the ECU and maybe under the engine bay before I source another coil pack, The vehicle also did have a mojor oil leak from the oil pressure switch which is now fixed, but there was a lot of oil around the side of the motor, Highly unlikley if would cause any electrical issues but i might check all the plugs just in case. The original idea was to get this car on the road and sell it but after looking on the net AUs are so cheap to buy its just not worth it.

Get yourself a can of carby cleaner ($6) and spray the outside of the inlet manifold where it goes into the head, each inlet tract at a time, if the engine coughs, picks up, idles better, worse, or runs differently, then you have a leaking inlet manifold - for $40 (price of the gasket -easy to fit) I'd try there first. AU's are notorious for it, my ute had it - sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders at idle and was 'ok' when it had some more fuel flowing - choke on or when the A/C kicked in, or I was cruising at 60 in 4th... Just a suggestion...

defenetly a spark issue ya33a, Disconect leads 1 or 6 from the spark plugs runs the same, disconect any other spark plug and it dies down and stalls. Simpally havent got a chance to investigate further.

REPLACE THE COIL PACK.
Read what I said in an earlier post. 1 & 6 fire together, 2 & 5, 4 & 3. Wasted spark. |

like SWC said. Stop switching leads, spark plugs.
#1 and #6 both fire off the same coil. Its very likely faulty, and its common. Get a new Coil pack/assembly, and problem should go away. Anything else your doing to start with is wasting time and/or money |

out of sheer curiosity, to namely SWC, does this happen gradually, perhaps starting with a slight misfire or just just drop a bank straight up?

It can happen as you say gradually, resulting in total bank failure or they can just fail all of a sudden. Best to use a good quality coil pack. |

As SWC said change coil pack. If not coil pack it will be either wiring or ecu. I never had wiring or ecu issuses with misfiring on au falcons. 99% it is coil pack.

Old dead topic, thought I'd add to it anyway
I have had 2 ECU's lose a driver for an injector, first time I thought spark, replaced everything to find spark was fine the whole time, got hold of a noid light kit and an injector wasn't firing. Swapped out ECU, fixed.

Spot on it was the ECU at fault, I didn't find that out myself, gave the car away after it collected leaves in my backyard. I do see it driving around every now and again.
