Been doing a bit of research for a while now,
lots of people have posted stuff like "what power can i get with a budget of $2500-$3000?" well i don't want that. i want to know 2 things, is it possible to get say 350-400rwkw from an AU xr6 engine? if yes whats the best way to do it? A few things you should know, this is an engine i wish to build for a speedway class, Victorian open saloons or modified production therefore forced induction is a no no. The engine is a VCT however i will be scrapping the VCT unit to open up a wider range of cam choices. I want the engine to be somewhat reliable in that it would last at least 2 seasons before a rebuild. I dont wish to spend 20grand on the engine but i know chasing power increases costs. I only chose a 6 cylinder engine because there is the possibility it may go into the wrecked escort we have down the back and the rules state "no v8 engines in 4 cylinder cars" also the engine was laying around down the back so i thought i may as well put it to use again. If anyone knows of some engine builders worth seeing that are nearby Bendigo, Victoria that would help too. |

I reckon without forced induction that power with that budget is not going to happen.

so $15,000 is too low of budget? like i said i was hoping to not spend $20,000, at least this season as im building the car aswell so im already in for $8,000 (doing all fabrication myself, saving quite a few $$$ there)

Ah no worries. I know it will be costly anyway. i mean its one thing to get power and another to keep it somewhat reliable.

If our old school member on here SWC gets on later id say he will be very good at answering your question.
He has good experience with AUs and knows them pretty well.

you would never get near 400rwkw from a n/a au engine.. even with a turbo your pushing it...
I think n/a you would be lucky to get 230rwkw thats with spending over 10g.. the problem is you can only go so far with port size, bore size and valve size and cam.. you can stroke it to 4.5ltr but even then your spending around 7g just for the bottom end and ill doubt you will get 250rwkw from that.. |

Second Troymans sentiments.
TVR had some pretty stonking 4 litre inline sixes, and they were only 400 odd horsepower at the flywheel. Going to be pushing s**t uphill getting above that. Even if you got her to rev, it just wouldn't breath enough.

I see. 400 horse at the flywheel would be good enough. to be perfectly honest i have set the bar quite high but thats so that even if i never reach it i will have gotten the most out of it.
also being a 4l do i want it to rev? would i be better off trying to utilize the torque and get that pull out of the corners? |

400hp is 300Kw at the flywheel. allowing for drivetrain loss 25%-30% depending on gearbox/diffratios you will wind up with 225-210RwKw. This is possible but it will be one cranky engine. in my opinin this will be maxed right out. You would be looking 10.5:1 comp plus a hell of alot of very proffesional head work and well as a cranky cam.
A T5 5 speed will not hold up for long and a standard BTR will not last long either. A worked up BTR would be your better option or a T56. Best I have seen personaly is 200RwKw. This was a street car and I would not want to drive it as an every day driver. AU Block, take it out 20 tho, head work, cam, damn good intake, Best extractors you can buy and a 3" exhaust and stick the b**ch on E85. Built up gearbox and beef up the diff. Done smart you will spend 15K with no problems. Then you need brakes and suspension Ohh by the way 350-400RwKw is never going to happen with a SOHC 4.0l Ford motor NA. |

why bother with the sohc,
FG eco LPI engine 12:1 compression run on E85 do the normal bolt on's upgrade timing/cam gear, valvetrain, oil pump to allow it to rev add headwork/cams if budget allows |

I knew a bit gets lost through the drivetrain, i guess i was hoping it wouldnt be that much. she wont see the road again, it will be raced at speedway. in the class there are guys with v8's and lots of money. anyone can "win" with money. i would love to have the hottest 6 out there and i know i can drive and could beat them. I started riding motorbikes at 4 and racing karts at 8 and cars at 12 |

2 questions about e85,
1. what has to be done to make the engine compatible, ive heard the ethanol can eat away at certain rubbers/gaskets/seals? 2. i have heard there are quality differences (along with a huge price difference) between pump e85 and the racing blend. pump e85 is i think $1.20/L and to buy it in the barrels worked out at $2/L |

Questions about e85,

You will need to run a high flow pump, eg Walbro GSS341, 30lb injectors and you will need to chip the ECU, but you would need to chip the ECU to run what you want NA anyway. You would want to replace any old fuel lines anyway. 2. I have heard there are quality differences (along with a huge price difference) between pump e85 and the racing blend. pump e85 is i think $1.20/L and to buy it in the barrels worked out at $2/L A. I can't comment on that question. Maybe someone else can enlighten you on that. |
