Hey guys,
I have a 98 AU1 Fairmont (87,000 ks) and lately it has been shuddering when I turn the key on a cold start (usually first thing in the morning). The severity of the shudder varies but sometimes it even stalls (and it's an auto...) Then I start it up again and it is fine. Took it down to the local Ford dealer last week and they ran their diagnostics test on it and came up with nothing. Then shelled out a couple of hundred for them to chemically clean the injectors, clean and reset the throttle body and replace the spark plugs (and leads). This fixed the problem for a few days but now it is doing it again and I'm at a loss. I also suspect that it is puffing smoke out the exhaust because I can smell it when I get out of the car. Has anybody else had similar problems with their AU or any ideas on what to do next? (I am a 20 y.o. female with limited mechanical knowledge ) Cheers Jo |

what sort of fuel are you using ... mine used to do the same on cold mornings for a bit - shudder. Bit scary if I was pulling out into traffic and nothing happened when I put my foot down.
It went away when I switched to premium, and never came back. Not sure if its the same with you but could be something to try...

was the battery disconnected? It may be the computer has to learn the new settings since the injectors were cleaned. You may also need a new HEGO sensor in the exhaust.
The ECU takes about 100 starts to learn the new settings so persist for a week and see if it improves. |

Jo, sounds like something my car used to do on-and-off... what would happen is i would start it... it'd idle like crap, very low RMP - which would result in the engine shuddering as the idle was too low... itd eventually stall. Try and start it a second time and it'd raise the idle rpm a bit - and everything would be sweet.
Luckily i never had to do anything... the problem went away. Do you know if the lads down at ford cleaned the idle speed controller (ISC)??

hey, i would go back to ford and tell them its doing the same thing they took it in for. They have charged youto fix said problem, so really they should have fixed it. I worked for toyota as an apprentice and if a problem came in and went out not fixed propley they took it back and kept it till it was fixed. They should do that to. Good luck mate. Which dealer did u take it to? i have some mates at different ford dealers.

could be a stuffed injector, leaking slowly overnight, dumping alot of fuel on one of the valves thus puff of smoke when starting it.
Cleaning injectors doesn't always fix them. |

Thanks so much guys for all your suggestions...
Happy, I have been shelling out for Shell premium for a while now, so I hope that's not the problem. MenaceEF, I took it to Titan Ford in Melville. I didn't mention this in the first post but about 4 days after they did the chemical clean I went to start the car and she wouldn't go at all. Turns out that my no. 6 injector was rooted. Had it towed back to Titans and they replaced that for free. Again it was OK for a day or two and then went back to its old ways. I have to go back to the dealer anyway because they forgot to put one of my bolts back in under the bonnet I will ask some questions and see how I go! |

Forgot to put a bolt back? Makes me question the quality of the work done on the rest of your car. No offense but don't let them push you around just because your a chick (sad but does tend to happen where cars are concerned).

Yep mine does same: shudders, maybe even knocks, last night wouldn't start - had to get in the XF to go down the shop.
