How is fitting a VCT engine different to fitting a standard AU engine into an EL?

there is not much difference in dropping the engine into the engine bay...the only difference is VCT control. You will need to have an AU ECU to run the VCT but there are some other dramas with that. Not sure what so I'll leave that to the professionals to comment.

AU ECU will only run a coil pack, so you will need to swap out your dizzy for that. Also from what i hear, only the very first AU ECU's came out with smartlock (if any came out with smartlock and supporting VCT i dunno) which would mean that if you couldn't get one, you would have to convert smartlock over to the AU equivelant (the name eludes me at this point in time :P) which is not a quick and easy job.

Well that sounds to be a hard way to do it. Is it possible to just replace the dizzy, ECU and mod the sump and fit the engine without modding the subframe or cuttin and welding things.

My advice would be to talk to someone who has done it mate, there is a lot of work involved, and yes it does require welding.... Go to the link above, there's a forum link at the bottom. He'll be more than happy to answer questions.

You can buy AU engines with a pre-cut sump to fit into earlier E-Series cars if not you have to get the sump cut yourself and welded yourself. It is possible...the dizzy can be replaced and so can the ECU...though as someone said before you have to have an ECU with VCT control with the smartlock security system or else the car won't start.

IMHO the vct is very overrated. Id much rather get a non-vct au tickford engine in it.

If you are going VCT i wouldnt bother with trying to put an AU ECU in it. Throw a dizzy in it, use your el ecu and an rpm switch to activate the vct at 3000 rpm.

yeh get a non-vct engine, it's too much drama getting the vct to work... you may as well get a ba engine and slot that in there.
the smartlock changed names after au1. in au2 form it's known as smartshield.

if you plan on getting the VCT in...you might as well go all the way and get a BA motor in there but obviously that causes more dramas.

Go non VCT and you should be right.

not really. There is only 1 extra wire you have to hook up to get the AU VCT working and its a simple on/off at 3000rpm. Its a very simple system compared to the BA VCT.

Im not a fan of the VCT engines because they are hardly any better than the non-vct's in stock form and are harder to modify.
