Keep the EF head. The EF's supposedly have better ports anyway....

But the AU rocker ratio screws you on cam selection a little if you go that way. There wasn't huge variation in engine from EF (94) through to AUs1 (about the 2000's) with anything much. They did strip a lot of cost out of the cars at the time though. (eg, second ed EL's didn't have fully painted engine bays & ran the hybrid engine, part EL part AU. EF's had the tranx dipstick & so on)

Just port the f**k out of what you have then add moar turbo

You can use an earlier cam in an AU head if you swap the rockers as well.

stock for stock EF head will be better but if you are going to do some port work go with the AU. They have more potential.

AT dipsticks were dropped around Feb '96 ( and they changed the P/S fluid to Mobil 424 ), and in '98 Ford went to water based paints, hence not painting the engine bays properly, and they stopped painting the engine blocks too.
They went back to a dizzy with the EL.....saved them $100 per car.....I was told that by an engineer from Ford Australia......apparently, they jumped the gun on emission standards with the EF....so I was told.
But, the EL did have extra reinforcing in the body shell, and IIRC, a thicker front windscreen.
