I read somewhere that the VCT xr6 doesn't respond to mods as well as the HP model. Why is this? I understand that the HP model is faster also, being 8kw less in power but 100kg lighter. Im tossing up which model to buy, have my eye on a manual VCT.

VCT is more difficult to mod the engine as there is very little aftermarket support for the cam. It is also a but fussy with exhaust mods although the Pcemaker Comps work very well with it. Apart from that (and the extra weight which is actually not so bad on the drag strip) its all very much the same.

Not really. The VCT stock cam is more than a match for a lot of after market cams. Decent exhaust, some minor intake mods and an edit will see it running times that are a match or better than many, many cammed cars. As for aftermarket cams, there are now a few of them out there with R&D still continuing.

14.5 outta $5000+ VCT.... i know someone who spent $700 for that Yeah, nothing like a $700 rocket. Let me guess, an EA with second hand exhaust and cam? I'll keep the AU thanks. It may cost more (and I can assure you that no AU will run a 14.5 with only $700 spent on it, a decent set of headers and cat back cost more than that) but this is not to do with doing up a light car with second hand parts. Its about if a VCT can be made to perform as well as a HP XR6. Fact of the matter is if you want any AU XR6 to go quick and stay reliable you will need to spend money. How much can vary and depends on what you plan in the future for it but without exhaust, intake and some sort of ECU mod they are not going to perform as well as lighter cars that can be tuned with a strobe and some basic knowledge. Good or bad thats just the facts of life.

are u running stock cam.. and also how did u go about the edit.. No idea what rwkw I'm running to be honest, never bothered to even ask since about Feb 06 when the original tune was done. Seriously, I just dont know. I'd guess about 145rwkw or so based on a 95mph run but its just that, a guess. The entire engine, cam, head, is all still 100% stock. Legitimate unopened engine. Edit.. simple. Took it to G&D. They are top guys and, as far as the VCT goes, I doubt anyone in the country can match them. I lent them the car for a few weeks and they just R&D'ed the Edit on the car and came back with a wicked tune.

I did read that the stock VCT ECU program is pretty bad and a piggyback/aftermarket ECU can give it sizeable gains after modifying. This may be the reason it responds differently to mods against the hp?

Could be. Certainly the factory VCT tunes were pretty average.. but then so were a lot of the HP's too. Running rich is an understatement.

What mods have you done to get 14.57 Casper? I'd rather the VCT with IRS even if it is heavier.

Don't let grunt be your deciding factor between these two.
I've been in a VCT AU XR6 and it was sticky as s**t (grippy). The bastard of a thing handled brilliantly and stuck to the road like tripple road kill. It also takes off from the lights faster than a HP, as it squats down, grips and f**k off fast. With a K&N, replacement headers, hi flow cat and exhaust, you will have yourself a bloody awesome car! If you still wanted more after that, chip it. Don't give up that sweet engine and sweet IRS just becuase the thing wont take to a cam as well as the HP. Have a chat to COREYMUNDAY if your not convinced. |
