Why put an AU head on an EF?
1) The VCT won't work 2) Use an EF/EL Tickford Head instead of an AU Tiky head, or By a CMS stage 2 head and cam package. |

ive got an ef also, gli. i put a ticky head on it, with a 977b cam and a full exhaust, im also running an ef xr6 ecu, not the fastest car around, but a big improvement from stock, as SWC said vct wont work.

Why does everyone hate the au head on an ef block? My au head runs a s**t load better than my ef one did, and the au cams are chunky so heaps of options for cams. Also I have heard its a better starting point for head work.
Although in saying that i believe the valves are weaker in the au head? |

Thank u guyz for advice so far but yes i hav looked at vct head from au xr6s and i was curious as in if the ecu (after market) of course can control the lift of the valves depending on the rev range therefor will be an increase in power n torque right through the rev range.
But... Is it better to just get head work done to my head i have already have with heavy duty valves, bored, honed, and acid dipped ect.... And just get a regrind cam? So what would be the best option to take? Cheers, |

Cheers, depends on how big your pockets are, i bought an ef xr6 head for $200, got it reco'd $350, an ef xr6 ecu $75, and a wade 977b regrind 977b cam $198, so all up around the $800 mark. to get headwork will cost you more than that alone

I have both an EF XR6 (mildly modded) and an AU XR6 VCT (basically stock). The AU VCT head offers no real advantage over the EF Tickford head. The Tickford head has modified ports, larger exhaust valves, and a minor increase in compression - and it works.
My advice (FWIW) is: get an EF Tickford head, give it a 3-angle valve job, use the AU MLS gasket, get an upgraded cam or regrind your existing one, and get a custom pre-programmed J3 chip from TI Performance - and you will be a happy camper for a very reasonable cost. If money's no object, a port and polish would help, but probably not the best way to spend your money if you are going to turbo it anyway. Don't skim the head for compression if you want to run boost later. I'm assuming you have got your intake and exhaust free-flowing already (snorkel, filter, airbox exit, headers, sports exhaust). You won't get the full benefit of your engine mods if they're fighting restriction on both ends. But, depending on how soon you are going turbo, you don't want to waste money on headers, etc you won't be able to use shortly.
