G'day all,
So this started happening about 2 or 3 months ago, the car suddenly started to die on cold starts, then crank over again and it would run fine. I left it until now as it has gotten worse, taking 2 starts and dies and firing perfectly on the third with a bit of help from the pedal. I have also noticed it is using oil and coolant.. replaced oil a month ago - about 3/4 on the dipstick (nothing on the driveway), have not changed coolant but topped it up a couple of months ago and is now under half on the reservoir. My guess is coolant and oil leaking in to the cylinder? making it hard to start and loss of fluids.. |

Is the car leaking any fluids? Is it getting hotter than usual? You might have blown the head. Get someone to check it out for you if you're unsure. Check the coolant for oil and check the oil dipstick for a milky residue. AU Falcons aren't normally known to blow the head gasket, though.

No its not getting hotter than normal, coolant is clean and oil is far from milky..
I have never seen oil leaks from the car so I have no idea where the fluids are going. |

Update and bump: it's still doing it.. fixed my coolant leak problem though, it was the thermostat gasket.
Oil is still clean and the car runs like a dream once its starts. Any chance of it being leaky injectors flooding the engine? (I have cleaned my ISC, new leads, plugs, new coolant etc) |

I would look at dirty injectors for your starting problem..

My EL had the exact same symptoms as this except it just got worse and worse until in the end it was losing all its water intermittently and using quite a lot of oil without any sign of where it was going, it was soon diagnosed as a blown head gasket. Did the gasket and everything was fine, no issues. I hope for your sake it isn't the head gasket, but sounds like it to me.
EL went great for around another 2 years, then it started smoking heaps major loss of power and using insane amounts of oil. Felt like it was seizing up but no idea how after regular oil and coolant changes and ordinary daily driving, so little power almost didn't get it into the shed to change out the engine ( lucky that was already planned beforehand. )

One week the coolant would be fine, and then over night it's lose almost it's full capacity of coolant with no sign of where it went.

Sounds like a fuel problem. Injectors been replaced ever?

Resolved the problem by changing the o2 sensor.. Along with much better fuel consumption!
