OK, Ive blown a head gasket, EBII, probably cracked head or worse also. Ive just got a AUII head, I was going to just use the gasket as i have a spare E-series engine at home.
But, This AU head looks in great nick, so , a straight head swap sounds good. But: Having stronger bolts,on a budget, can i use the AU bolts with confidence, instead of new ones? I'll leave the AU exhaust on huh? they have larger ex. valves, or something? Intake also? I wanted to do the BBM, but im complicating myself here, with ECU etc. Ultimately would use the whole engine, but i dont have another car in the meantime, which is needed. My EB gasket leaking internally into rear pot, now its creeping into the oil. On top of draining the sump, is there any other problems/damage to look for whilst doing the swap. edit: P.S. I have taken the head from my spare E series 4.0L, is it the same process, take out the chain tensioner under the water pump, cabletying the chain to sprocket, removing the cam bolt, and the head's ready to lift(after the bastard headbolts are cracked)? did i forget anything? A lot of contemplating here, im stripping the EB top end off 2moro, crosssing my fingers. And any advice from the experienced would be appreciated, thanx matt Last edited by matman72 on Fri Sep 09, 2011 9:33 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

head will fit no problems, just keep in mind that an au head wont take a e series cam unless you change the internals of the head like the rocker stuff so if you wanted to stick an aftermarket cam in remember its an au head, you have to use new headbolts as they stretch when you do them up an once theyve been done up they are a throw away once theyve been undone

Thanx bry40l,
Im taking the head off- cam, rockers & all, and using the whole lot on the EB, even leaving the exhaust on, dont need anything special yet, just need it to run a while longer. I wish i had the resources & time to use the BBM inlet etc., but my EB MPFI should bolt on huh? no probs? So, using the AU headbolts(as opposed to buying new ones, as they all advise), shouldnt pose a problem, they ARE stronger arent they? thanx again mate matt |

yeah should all bolt on fine from the eb,
im pretty sure the headbolts need to be replaced because they are ment to be a throw away once they have been tightend up as they stretch and are useless once ondone again

I am using an AU head with ef cam and rocker gear. Apparently the valves won't close properly because of the e series larger lobe diameter (according to wade cams) But if that was the case I would have thought the car would be running s**t. I have a slight decrease in torque till about 1500rpms but after that it's a lot more powerful, although my ef xr6 head was soft. I am only using it temporarily until I get some AU rocker gear, but it does work.

if your using the ef cam and ef rockers you should be fine...
the bearing journals are the same, its just the rockers and cam lift thats different.. if you use a ef cam with the au rockers the engine will not run it will bend valves before it even starts.. |

This went to hell, but thanx for the tips guys.
Striped most of the head with sidchrome 12point sockets, before i realized i needed hex impact socket. Damage was done, got 2 bolts out So the AU head is stating put, Been quoted %% for an AU head gasket, might just swap that over, get it running good, sell the thing. Just bought an EF Futura anyway, lowered, tinted, Engine sound, 210K on it, used my OBD scanner thing, only code was the crank angle sensor. Body needs work, I'll be keen to do that, so its a bargain for 400 bux hey . Anyone want an EBII?? |
