I dont know what brand mine is. It could be a B&M or a Derale or PWR, I dont know. I dont have any pics, but I know it cost me supplied and fitted $350. Well worth the investment to keeping fluids in the trans cool.

yer i wouldn't mind somewhere else to mount it but theres nowhere as efficient. it does look pretty free flowing so i'll probably just put it there in front of the condensor.will take some pics when done.
i thought this thread failed hehe

oh yeh anuther thing you can do that works a treat is use an air condenser (the thing that looks like a radiator infront of ur radiator) as a trans cooler, works a treat and theres no chance of it ever getting hot

and how much pressure drop would it induce ?
i already have a purpose built B&M cooler i think i'll just use that. theres is such thing as auto fluid being too cold. i also wanted to know if people have kept the original cooler inline to act as a warmer for cold conditions.i think this is why they mounted the bf cooler to the block.seems to act more as a heater than a cooler lol.

You should run inline with the standard cooler, if its independent then the oil takes longer to get up to temp and could be causing damage in the meantime.
Standalone coolers are more suited to race cars. |

cheers milo. so would you run the standard one before or after the b&m ?
i'm guessing it should be in the return line.

yes thats how ive got mine set up flow into top of cooler return out bottom into top of radiator cooler then return to tranny. noticed a huge difference in tranny changers heaps smoother.

low_ryda wrote: theres is such thing as auto fluid being too cold. Yes. The 4 speeds are designed to run with a fluid temp of about 95deg. And for best performance, they need to get upto that temp quickly. Which is why its unwise to remove the radiator cooler from the circuit. All the external cooler will do is keep the thing at a temp consistantly close to the optimum. low_ryda wrote: i think this is why they mounted the bf cooler to the block.seems to act more as a heater than a cooler lol. No, its because ZF wouldn't warrant the boxes if the fluid temp went above 85deg, they aren't desgined to run that hot. So the heat from the block and water is used to get the thing upto temp really quickly. And I believe the heat exhanger has a thermostat in it to stop things getting too hot. Apparently it works. |

I just went and checked my factory eb setup with external trans cooler that runs inline with the radiator cooler, basically the bottom cooler line on the radiator stays untouched and the top line has the front mount cooler spliced onto it.So that would mean the external cooler is before the radiator cooler if the top line is the feed. Hope that makes sense |

yeah i talked to the guy thats going to do my service and he set me in the right direction. after market cooler first, then the factory unit then back to the box. being after market he said if i mount it he will plumb it up because they're too much of a p.i.t.a to mount, and now i'm almost done i completely agree lol
just hope i picked an effective position.will get some pics up soon.

As long as it gets decent airflow it should be fine.

Mine is made by Derale, hate it. All the fins are breaking down and it looks ugly as sin. I'm on the lookout for a new cooler. I found a particular one on Fleabay but only comes with AN10 fittings and not AN6 which is what i require I havn't had the cooler running through the radiator since i put the BA engine in, as my last radiator core broke down and started letting small particles of copper into the transmission Sorry about the fuzzy picture, pre-bay painting, yech!

Sorry to go a bit off-topic but, Fordman, is that the Derale 13104 cooler you have in the picture? If it is, that's the exact same cooler i had lined up for my EF, pretty cheap compared to others on the market. How long did you have it on for before it started breaking down and all??
Will be interesting to see how your B&M cooler goes low_ryda. After hearing about what happened to Fordman's cooler im thinking i may go for a different cooler now |
