Option 1:
Replacing the auto trans fluid by removing the pan = 4L If you do this option how many kms can you do before you need to do another fluid change? Option 2: Replace the auto trans fluid by removing the whole box and emptying the converter = 9L If you do this option how many kms can you do before you need to do another fluid change? I'm trying to decide whether it's worth taking the whole box out and doing the whole 9L Cheers

I'm actually quite interested in this as my new AU v8 with only 100k seems to want to slip on the odd occasion when cold.
I wouldn't think the whole box has to be removed to empty the converter? can't they just flush it out??

I used a hose for the cooling system, but i'm not sure whether it works for the transmission there might be an expert around here who can help

the auto can be completely flushed with it still in the car. basically you need to remove one of the cooler lines and feed fresh fluid through the box as the motors running. i don't recommend you do this at home. a trans shop will be able to do it should only cost about 120-150 give or take.
another way is to force compressed air through the cooler lines at the radiator end again i don't recommend you do this home

the best way is to go to a shop and get it done propley that way if their is anything wrong the person will pick up on it and let you know, i had mine done through ford service about 12 months ago anbd set ma back a little under $120

I'm not sure what you guys are getting for $120-$150 but it not a full flush.
To fully flush ALL of the old fluid out, you end up using about 17-20L of fluid, that alone costs about $120, |

Where did you get 17-20L from? cheers

17-20L is a full flush out, just draining it and refilling it won't get all the old s**t out

It definitely holds around 9-10L I remember when we change the gbox in the AU. Minor service- just dropping the pan is alrite, but if she’s done a few k’s definitely go with the converter flush.
I think service intervals for tranny service are around 50,000ks- but I could be wrong. In our cars we do the minor service once a year- they do around 15,000-20,000ks. |

Well IIRC you drain the old stuff out, fill it up with new oil, give it a few trips around the block, then drain again and refill with fresh stuff again so by the time thats done you have used 20L of oil. That will get all the old stuff out the converter aswell

Take it to Ford. Give them $250 (Or whatever it is now) for a full flush and walk away happy.
There are just some things you can't do effectively at home, and some things a tranny specialist cant do. Essentially all Ford do is what nanns_ed has said. Remove cooler lines and keep on pumping new fluid into the box until it starts coming out red and clear from the other cooler line. Can take alot of fluid! |

That will get all the old stuff out the converter aswell [/quote]You don't have to run it around the block...have it up on 4 jack stands ( and level ), run it through the gears..including reverse....then pump it out the top fitting in the radiator. You can use from 16 to 20lt to do this. On the last pump out, take the pan off, change the filter & gasket, then refit, refill, run through gears, and check oil level, and recheck when cold ( filler plug type tranny ).

Where did you get 17-20L from? cheers well if you want to pull the box out and drain it then yeah you can refill it with 10L. Flushing the box in the car with the engine running will use about 17-20 by the time the fluid starts coming out clean. I never said the box holds 17-20L. Even on Repco special 20L costs you about $150 then add in the filter kit and labor if you are not doing it your self. Plain to see it cost well over someone suggested $120. |
