My old EA motor had a rattle like that... pretty sure that was the cam chain though... it was slapping around pretty bad I suspect.

can you tell where the noise was coming from boehm?

It's definately coming from under the rocker cover.

I had the car on, and it was rattling, and took off the oil lid on the rocker cover and the sound got much louder...suspecting lifters..

do oil, put in good quality gear, try 15-40w or simliar.
run a few tanks of premium through her and you'll notice its much better.

i had this on mine a while ago and doing this worked a treat

Run a tank of v-power and give her a 'good run' yeah that means running out every gear when she has warmed up. Just give her a good run every month or so and you will notice the difference.
