Hi all, I thought I would do a thread on the underdrive install for the BA/BF I6 as I'm doing it atm, I'm doing it out of the car as its going in my XG (so doing everything I can before installing), if you were doing in car you would have to remove the fans and radiator obviously.
Tools needed, see pics↓

The BA/BF balancer doesn't have the three threaded holes like the E-series(strangely enough the underdrive balancer does-lol ) so you need a three prong puller like this one, each prong goes on the three points on the balancer.

Ok crankshaft oil seal, mine wasn't too bad if I was replacing it with a good used harmonic balancer you maybe could get away with leaving old one in-but better to change it anyway, so new balancer needs a new seal, I use a large screwdriver but wrap the tip up with duct tape so theres no chance of damaging the crankshaft snout or the seat for the seal.
Clean seal seat and crankshaft snout thoroughly (I used prepsol)also using a white rag or good papertowel so you can see when it's clean, check snout and seal seat for any burrs or damage (if any try removing with fine emery paper)

most workshop manuals say to use a bit of multipurpose grease on the outer face of the crankshaft seal(only use the grease that comes with the seal)-I worked with a guy (ford mechanic)awhile back he explained that the bead of grease in the seal ID is overfilled so that you can use it for the seat in the timing cover aswell, so with a clean seal seat and clean hands run your finger over the ID of the seal to flatten it in the seal and use the excess grease on your finger to grease the seal seat in the timing cover, as you do not need much.

In above pic you can see how to tap in the new seal-you could use a flat bit of wood to tap it in squarely till its seated flat with the timing cover, my roll of duct tape (same one I used for seal removal tool) was the same diameter as the seal so I used it with the wood and gently tapped it in with a rubber mallet till seated.

Ok the new balancer needs to be cleaned up for installation-but before that you need to check a couple of things, even with a OEM balancer you need to check that there is no difference in the ID of the balancer where if fits on the crankshaft snout (I've added a pic of the installation instructions explaining the bore diameter and Interference) but IMO it is not necessary to go this far in a street application, So in my case the ID of the balancer was a hair over 32mm in both the OEM & the underdrive (checking right around on both with no variation)will still give maximum vibration dampening, so I gave the ID a go over with fine emery paper including where the key engages then cleaned both OD & ID of the balancer with prepsol (just like a new disc rotor or a flywheel the unpainted parts on the underdrive are sprayed with a sealant for preventing rust during shipping and storage-this must be removed), the crankshaft snout and the ID of the balancer needs to be lubricated with oil.

Ok with snout and underdrive oiled you can fit the balancer on the snout squarely as possible, I then use the same piece of wood I used for the seal to tap the balancer in (turning the wood as you go to prevent it kinking & and keeping it go on straight) once its over half way on (after bolt and washer is cleaned up use a bit of anti seize on the bolt and tighten up by hand) I use the rattle gun to take it the rest of the way, then you need to torque to 125 Nm
