Hi everyone,
I have a 95 EF and I was going to put a BA engine into it but seemed like alot of money and that you have to cut the frame which I dont really wanna do so I was wondering if you could fit a BA head on a EF block? so that way it will fit without having to cut anything.
Cheers

The short answer to this question is NO.

BA head is wider than the E series Block.

+1 only other option is AU head and rocker gear

Why use an AU head on an E series, they will fit but there is nothing you can do to a AU Head that you can't do to a E head.

I know, just pointing out is the only other series of head which will fit

Yeah, SWC is right your better off using a E Series head if you plan on doing work to one...

Years ago you could buy a dohc head conversion for the au. Have seen it brought up on here a few times Swc would be old enough to remember :)

Has anyone actually tried this? Territory AWD into BF/FG-series is also supposed to be impossible as well.

ive just googled the headgaskets for EA-AU and BA-FG and they look mighty similar.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PERMASEAL-ML ... 2c6a382f5f

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FORD-FALCON- ... 1c1d98201a

At a guess, a small strip would need to be welded along the galleries on the DOHC head and decked flat to seal it, and there is an extra gallery at the front- otherwise they look similar enough that if i was thinking of doing this i would go ahead and start buying parts

No one said it was impossible. The OP said "so that way it will fit without having to cut anything."

Anything is possible if you throw enough Effort, Skill, Time and Money at it. At the end of the day what is your return for the effort. What power increase will you achieve? What is the $ per Kw ratio. I would think that at the end of the day a Barra conversion would be the simpler and cheaper way to go. I do know of drive in drive out Barra conversions being done for less than $5,000.00.

I must admit it is an interesting concept and for some it is just the point of doing something that someone else hasn't done.

You would need to run Barra intake as well as exhaust manifold as the ports are different. BBM could be modified to take an EF/EL upper or even mod the BA upper. Clearence on the Passenger Strut tower will be ok as there are those that have fitted the Barra with plenty of clearence.

The Barra runs a single row timing chain compaired to the E/AU series engines. I am not sure but does the Barra run an AUX Gear? As it doesn't have a dizzy and the Cam sensor is on the front casing and the oil pump is a different drive then I don't see the need for the AUX Drive.

You would need to work out how to set up the timing chain to include the AUX Drive and you would need to get the correct sprocket as well, maybe also the Crank sprocket too.

I would suspect that you would need to fabricate a new Timing case as well.

Food for thought.

Anyone else have constructive thoughts on this.

does that $5k include the engineers cert?

most of the barra's increase in power over the old SOHC will come from the head itself - there would be minimal power advantages in the block.

when it comes to the timing chain and the oil pump/CAS drive it gets complicated BUT i would hazard a guess that a custom set of cam gears (delete VCT) a custom crank sprocket and a custom SOHC timing chain would take care of that. timing cover would be a matter of machining up a bit that bridges the DOHC head to the SOHC cover. this would be quite a few $$ of machinework, i wouldnt have the skill or tools for this part.

i recon it would be possible to get 90% the gain of a full barra engine conversion for 50% the (legally engineered insurable/legal) cost of a conversion. and other than the modified head and timing cover there would be no cutting to the car. run SOHC injection with a tune and away you go.

if you have the first 3 it is amazing how little of the fourth you need.

It bolts directly into the au engine bay. And will run off the au computer if you know what your doing. Also if your so worried about cutting the k frame in e series dry sump the motor

What runs off the AU ECU? Are you talking the Barra engine or the Head on an E/AU Block?
