Every car, every make theres always a few that have a few bugs in them..thats why they have warranties incase you buy one that wasnt made right like the others...my dad has a ba fairmont drives it like normal but plants when he feels like it...hasnt had a prob yet...but sorry to hear about yours.

But, if you're one of those people who do legitimately need the 1 tonne tray and need another tonne in the trailer behind you then this could be adding to your problems... especially if your driving is 'spirited'. After all, if you're booting all that torque through the transmission lugging around 1700kg of ute, 1000kg in the tray and another 1000kg in a trailer (3700kg all up) then the gearbox will be spending s**t loads more time in the lower gears under a much higher load than compared to a sedan. Like it or not cars have never been over-engineered to last the next 4 ice ages and they never will be. Ford aren't going to design a gearbox to withstand the forces imposed on it by the 0.01% of drivers that tow 4t with it. They design the gearbox to withstand the forces imposed upon it by the 99.99% of drivers. Over-engineering the gearbox adds cost to the car, adds weight to the car which increases fuel usage and makes it harder for Ford to meet the emission requirements which further adds cost to the car. If you're regularly pulling along heavy loads then a shorter diff ratio migh ease the strain on the gearbox. That's perhaps something to consider. If your gunna use it for that then you need a '250 |

All reasonable minded people would expect if Ford sold a ute with a tow bar, then you could load the tray and tow a trailer at the same time.
If the ute can't be loaded and tow a trailer at the same time, then they should not sell it with a tow bar as an option (or highlight its capabilities in a way that would not be missunderstood prior to purchase). It's that simple. if it can handle it, then it shouldn't be sold implying that it can. We should all remember that in the great land of Auz, we have more protection when buying a toaster than when buying a car. This is where the real problem lies. Going back to the ute example mentioned in an earlier post, if you load a ute and tow at the same time, and your gearbox/diff/engine/body/etc fails, it should be repaired. If it happens again, you should be within your rights to return it as not fit for the purpose you bought it for and get a full refund. |

GEESUS. If you were going to haul heavy duty loads you should of saved up a few more pennies and bought a F250 instead.

if you're towing or carrying alot of weight the reccomendation is that u fit an external tranny cooler? have u?
also, working at a ford dealer i have to say im dumbfounded a bit... 99% of BA's never give trouble, with the exception of brake shudder, which was fixed on all BA's built after 22/11/2003... if u had an earlier BA and wanted to fix it, u could try fitting callipers and pads off a later model BA... also as a side note, AU's suffer from the brake shudder problem too.. not as bad but it does happen fairly often |

who said i was carring huge loads i its an xr you can not carry more than 635 kilo's in the xr and most of the time it gets drivin by my missus who does get past 3 thou on the tacho the point i was making was that it shouldn't be requiring a third box let alone a second box !!!!! but i have a whole list of things that has gone wrong with it except for the brakes and its unacceptabe....

im with u mate, the probs we've had with ours is just rediculous...i mean, a leaking fuel tank? that was life threatening dangerous, not just a pain in the backside. and your 3rd gearbox? thats just not cool

Sorry mate, I think I read some one elses post and they were assuming cause you had a Towpack on you were towing trailers as well But I hear ya now pretty piss poor effort on Ford not to get these Tranny Box issues sorted properly.
