you'll need a aftermarket ECU. I think its becuase the BA ECU is wired up with heaps of other stuff that the E-series isn't compatable with. Like instrument cluster, SSS and [i]smartshield[i] (Not smartlock) Immobilisation

also might be a bit easier on EF due to both EF and BA being coil pack

i know the bonnet needs a hole or bulge, not sure about the crossmember, gearbox.

if you were to keep the EF ECU then, could you just throw in a pair of cams that aren't designed for the VCT? I'd imagine that you would have to trick the ECU into thinking that it's still only a SOHC setup etc etc but could you simply leave everything else uplugged?

BA runs 1 coil per cylinder IIRC?
engine wont fit height wise. need buldge or hole. engine wont fit into crossmember/kframe without chopping it up.

Yes, you need to cut crossmember to fit it, And yes this will render your car illegal/unroadworthy!
There is a unit coming out that will allow you to keep the ba ecu and use that. Id imagine you would have to sort out fuel sender also. You would need to use the ba auto too, which means you may need a different tailshaft as the length could be different If you could have the car off teh road for a couple weeks and were quite good technically you could to it! But if you are a novice that has never pulled there car apart you would stand no chance! Hope this helps

Fitting different engines into 4x4's is easy because the engine bays are huge and there is no k-frame. Unlike the BA 6's, LS1's are also very simple engines (no fancy DOHC VCT, drive-by-wire, etc). Also lots of aftermarket support for engine conversions for 4x4's. As far as the BA into anything else, there are so many threads already on this topic - do a search.

It is deffinately possible to do, jetxr has a ba xr6t motor paired up with a toploader in his ef/el, going to a manual like that is prob the best way of doing it then you can run something like a wolf as a stand alone ecu. There are some places now that are starting to sell items that allow ba ecus to run in non bas but im not really sure how they work.

BA's run coil on plug, so you're up for BA ECU or aftermarket ECU.
kframe will 100% need modification, similar to what needs to be done to get an AU engine in an eseries. bonnet will need cutting, weather it be the bonnet frame or skin depends on what bonnet you're using. the rocker cover clears the bonnet skin but not the frame, how ever when the engine torques up you'd risk it hitting the bonnet. EF auto will *somewhat* bolt up apparently, you'd need to retain a number of the stock EF sensors to ensure proper operation. Don't know if the BA ECU can control the EF transmission, but as with aftermarket ECU you could keep the stock ECU with the new ECU. EF/EL throttle body should go straingt on the manifold and allow cable usage.
