my boss has trouble with his 2004 ba falcon xt 4pd.
he discribed the problem as rough idle and a surging while driving. he said as it started to rev hard it felt like a shutter. he thinks its a dirty batch of fuel...has used 3/4 of a tank and it started the trouble yesterday but was running fine today. i was thinking coil packs....iv heard xr6t packs go about 100,000, xt's would be to different it has 80,000 on it need lots of help tonight as were gonna have a crack at it tomorrow. cheers

1 possibility...
oil control valves on top of the rocker cover get clogged up, cause rough running, hard start. put 12 volts across them, you will hear them click. do that a few times to each. There is one for each cam, toawrds the front, on top of the head. Only electrical plugs in that area, can't miss em. There's probably a proper way to do it but thats the quick way. |

would the oil valves make it shutter while driving though?

yeah they can do, but when they get clogged enough to make it noticeable it's usually too late by this stage and your parked on the side of the road

We had an AU falcon that had that sourght of problem in work the other week. We figured he had been through a puddle and got the coil pack wet. Ran rough for a while and once it had dried off, it ran all right. Sometimes it's hard to find cracks in coil packs. I'd warm the car up and spray some water over the coil pack and see what happens. Coil packs with cracks don't like water.

make sure he hasnt degreased the engine lately of had any water in the engine bay. wetting the coils etc will cause exactly that problem

True i heard B series need strong batteries to function correctly or they can play up.
