G'day all,
I just purchased a BA 2004 futura and am asking about 2 things I noticed around the engine. The serpentine belt tensioner had what appeared to be some belt particles on top if the tensioner (powder as if the belt was rubbing). Is this normal? Secondly there seemed to be a residue around the hoses for the power steering pump. Anyone had these before? The reason I ask is that these probs were found and pointed out. The dealer said they were a common prob so we went and picked a random car in the lot and the pulley had the powder and also the residue. I am getting these checked under warranty but would like to know if any others have found this and wether to be/not to be worried about it. cya EFfutura Last edited by EFfutura on Tue Feb 06, 2007 8:38 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

I get a greenish residue around my cooling pipes (coolant) but such a small amount over time that its consdiderd negligeble. Also, my P/S pump has a leak, so slight, it leaks a couple of mm every 2000km's. I simply wipe the tube off every now and then. I mean to get it fixed soon as it goes back for service however I wouldn't lose sleep over it for the time being.

Thats ridiculous, rust already for such a young car. Where abouts have you noticed it.
On the EF I have tiny spots of rust appearing on my roof and a couple of panels. Nothing big yet. |

rust is a sign that the car has not been well looked after at some stage. i know we have water restrictions but i feel it is important to keep the car clean. water by itself does not cause rust. it is all the dirt etc that allows the water to stick to the metal for extended periods, esp in places like rear wheel arch etc. i always clean in the wheel arches and inside doors and make sure all drain holes are free to minimise the chances of rust. cars these days really shouldn't rust.

i also work at a ford dealer and ive seen maybe 5-10 ba's with rust. considering i see 5-10 a day its not really a big deal... as others have said it all comes down to how well theyve been looked after...

I woud be VERY concerned if the timing belt on a BA was showing any wear at all! But first of all I would want to know what monkey put a timing belt where the chain is supposed to be! lol.....
I guess you are talking about the serpentine accessory belt. Seems pretty normal, mine and every other i6 BA I've looked at has the same thing. As for the power steering issue, I have not noticed it on mine, but will have to have a closer look for any leaks now that I know its a bit of a problem with them. Thanks for that!

Mine has the residue from the belt, however no wetness on the power steering connectors and lines.
Mine doesnt have any rust at all, but I wash it thoroughly every week (always driving on dirt roads).
