I have been doing research, that's where I read about using an angle grinder with a wire brush on the block. It sounded like something that is a little extreme, so I asked about it here. Again, your d**k attitude isn't called for and doesn't help. I figured that asking for help is what the forums are for. But yeah, my point is that I haven't just been guessing what to do, I have been researching and reading up on this.

Just my friendly advise, its not worth the stress anymore and you'll end up in the wrong. Yeah it happens ( and can happen allot on here) but you have got plenty of good advise from other members. What way you thinking of going, DIY or just pay the cash to be someone elses worry? Kind of hard to make a claim warranty wise on yourself if something goes wrong hey. |

Yeah it's all good. I think I'm gonna go the DIY way with it. For the chance of being able to get the job done for less than $300, I think it's worth me having a go and just taking my time and doing some through research.
You're right though, I have gotten some good advice off some of the members, so thanks to those people.

also be aware the timing chain setup on BA/BF is totally different to EA-EL and the timing cover and chains actually need to be removed before the head comes off.

wire brush fitting on a angle grinder? no, don't do it scotty!
gasket stripper and a sharp, clean scraper. And some fine sand paper to get any stubborn bits

I just realized this was for a BA engine not a e series. How did you go with this? No where near as straight forward as a e series 4.0. |

So, my brother and I replaced the head gasket and thought we had done an excellent job.
We put it all back together, turned it over and it ran like crap. Thinking we had stuffed something up, we took the rocker cover and the manifolds off and checked that the spark plugs and coils looked okay. Everything looked okay so we put it back together and tried again, still ran like balls. Let it sit there for a while and eventually took it to a mechanic to get it checked out. The end result was that one of the spark plugs, three of the coils and one of the injectors were dead. It runs again! My confidence in our ability at changing a head gasket was gone, but turns out we did the job just fine! The most annoying parts of the whole job was taking the harmonic balancer off and finding out that the water pump was nearly at the end of its life. All in all, probably wouldn't do it again because of how annoying it is.

Good on yas.
Very common to work on a B series an have to coils die when you put them back in. Even get some that are faulty from new. |
