Howdy all, I have a 2005 BA Fairmont with 145k kms that surges mostly under very light load. Read that as just maintaining speed or under the slightest of acceleration.
So far I have: 1 Replaced the plugs (needed to be done smoother but still sure) 2 Replaced coil packs (aftermarket as I was pretty sure std ones were ok from inspection so didn't want to spend too much. Slightly moother better power delivery but still surges) 3 Fuel filter 4 Injector cleaner fuel addative 5 Cleaned throttle body (was pretty clean anyway) 6 Standard service items, engine oil, oil filter, air filter. 7 Cleaned battery terminals I am loathe to take it to any dealer as they will prob do the same as me and replace items until it is fixed which is great if you have an unlimited budget. Ps have had it at ford they pressure tested fuel rail, checked codes, said no problem evident. If anyone has any ideas as to where to look next would be appreciated greatly.

could be leaking intake gasket or vacuum hose popped off somewhere... fuel pump might have s**t its self.... oxygen sensor could be fked, have you checked your oil/ water is the oil milky? or the water frothy and a greyish milky colour? could be a leaking head gasket... if ur oil looks like light grey milk then thats a head gasket. just a few suggetions, see how u go

Howdy LOLHSV,
Thanks for the ideas. Fuel pump ok (ford did fuel pressure test all good), Oil and water all good, did service recently and oil apart from being due to be changed was not milky at all. Water spot on. Hoses all good, will have a root around and investigate the o2 sensor. Many thanks for the ideas. Will post how I go. Fingers crossed. Cheers Paul

Sludge build up in the cam phasers? There was a flash released for all the early twin cam's that purged the phasers on startup to cleans them. There could be a possibility it was missed & its now jumping when phasing the cams

Ok people after many, many trips to my mechanic here is what was done.
1. new plugs and coil packs - made car much smoother but still surged 2. O2 sensor replaced once then a 2nd time when car was undrivable 2. injector cleaning (removed from car) - smoother again but still surged 3. removed fuel pump checked hose (can airate and cause surging all ok) still surged 4. Replaced earth battery lead (was loose) no difference made 5. Mechanic when back over everything again and found no 6 coil was arcing so it was replaced with a bosch unit. Car was significantly better but still surged but much less. The next bit is kind of freaky, after a while I cant really remember how long, it just stopped. But don't worry then I got some other random vibrating in the steering wheel did it some times and not others on the same road at the exact same speed. Don't worry have posted on another topic about this have it 98% sorted (most likely a bit of everything wrong, tyres, buckled wheel, worn slip joint on steering rod and brake booster adjustment). In short, hopefully this car will drive like new for a long long time and I won't have any more problems with it. Ps only done an alleged 155000 kms PPS even had to get new hand brake kit and shoes. You all know why if you have one.
