Hi everyone.
My BA is nudging 315,000km, and it developed this tick tick tick noise which sounds exactly like an E-series lifter noise. I thought it was the exhaust gasket but it didn't go away when I replaced it, so I went the next step and had all the lifters replaced. Got the car back and it's still there! It's driving me up the wall cos it sounds terrible. Anyone here got any ideas as to what it could be? If it's some sort of wear in the valve train, would filling it with Penrite HPR15 (15w60) be ok for an engine designed for 10w30? Hopefully it might shut it up A bit.

Should mention the engine has had quite a hard life, I give it a hard time 75% of the time, Cept when it's cold of course.

Could always try some thicker grade oil and see how it goes.

Does the noise go away after a while or is it constant?

Its quieter when you start it cold, then it gets louder as it warms up. Some days it's loud as hell, somedays it's not so bad. But still, I'd like to get rid of it.

How much was it to replace your lifters? is it a big job? My BF makes this s**t ticking noise which gets louder as revs increase, i swear its the lifers or could be the timing chain slightly hitting something

Apparently the lifters on the DOHC engine don't s**t themselves, they're only tiny little things.

there not really called lifters in the ohc engines, although serve the same purpose..
if you look at where they are in the valve train you could almost call them pushers.. they are actually called hydraulic lash adjusters.. |

So, did an oil flush and change with Penrite HPR15 15w60.... absolutely no difference in the ticking sound.
this is driving me up the wall.

Timing chain worn or busted heavily worn chain guides . Or (and I have seen this ) fishing sinker on a bit of fishing line tied to the block so it would rattle and bang making the the person come back for more work on their car . Then they just cut the line off and "hey presto" car fixed $500 thanks. (happend to a mate of mine, and at the time I was working next to a good mechanic, so I got him to have a look at it and thats what he found. Friend wasnt happy, and first mechanic who reco'd the head denighed doing it, so there wasnt much he could do about it.

my bf developed the ticking noise after an oil flush and it's had a pretty good life since new. I thought an oil flush at 100,000km would be a great idea... now I have the same lifter like non lifter/hla noise. Being a fairmont I just wind the windows up and turn on the climate control then the leaf stuck in fan noise takes over. Thanks changeable cabin filter. Late model cars are heaps fun.
With over 300,000kms thicker oil as a bandaid probably isn't a bad option. I'd take it in small steps up though I wouldn't go from 30 to 60.
