i thought i read somewhere that the B series (6cyl) starter has a bit more oomph to it but will fit (possibly with some modifcations)

I think there was a change from a conventional starter to a reduction starter sometime around the late X-series to early e-series.

ba (possibly even bf i don't know) starter motors fit all the way back to xf. for the i6

can't go the other way though afaik i.e. xf starter in ba, the older units are larger and produce less torque.

yeah they will fit no worries and no mods needed. if u were to go to ford and try get a starter for an ed for example u will be given a ba starter. they have superceded the old starters with the current ba/bf starters

They may be the same though . . . but you'd have to check.
