I think I have a major problem with my either harmonic balancer or one of my idler pulleys, or possibly the belt tensioner. basically I replaced both of the pulleys on the tensioner a couple of days ago, whilst I had it off i noticed there was a groove worn into the metal where the belt had been skimming against the tansioner on the lower pulley.
I just finished doing a few things to the car and the problem is still there. The belt is pretty much sitting half on the lower pulley and wobbling all over the joint as is the balancer. See pic. Anyway it's got me stuffed, if the balancer was a bit wobly would it cause the tensioner pully to almost push the belt off ? I'm going to go pull the belt tensioner off again now and check it out, i'll post a pic of the groove it had worn in, the groove was allready there before I replaced the pullys and belt. So if i'm up for a new harmonic balancer can anyone suggest a better quality aftermarket one, or is there nothing available for the i6 ? I'll post some more pics up when I remove the tensioner but it doesn't look good. Thanks Damo |

You can see the groove the belt has worn in here, it's even more prominent now and there were metal shavings around it.
and here is a pic of the tensioner. I havn't even been driving the car and I keep finding problems with it, can't drive it till end of july. So if anyone has had a similair experience please share what the problem was and how you fixed it. |

I wonder if genuine pulleys are slightly better

That wear is caused by the tensioner being worn out, as in where it pivots. You need a new tensioner assembly. Same thing happens on Bommadores.

thanks CJH any idea on the price of a new tensioner, i'm surprised this wasn't picked up on when i had the motor changed, i guess it confirms the fact my mechanic is s**t. What is a new tensioner worth ?
Krytox, these pulleys are better than the genuine plastic crap ones. I'm guessing the balncer is ok than ? might replace it anyways. |

If the rubber isn't hanging out of the balancer, or gone back inside, it'll be alright. The tensioner, price wise???, about $200 +. The XH ute ones are another $100 dearer. You could track down a used one from the wreckers, just hope it isn't off a cab engine. I've had to replace them on cabs a fair bit. I like the plastic pulleys, less weight.

I had the same problem with my tensioner.
I got one from the wreckers for $25 but it took a few goes to find a nice straight one. I replaced the pulleys for $20 each. From memory a new one from Ford was about $250.

ok continuing on from this I got a good tensioner from a wreckers this morning and wacked it on. Now I had the exact same problem as before but even worse this time. Shut the car down strait away.
After having a good look down there I have a feeling my balancer has slipped out heaps, because the bottom pulley on the tensioner doesn't even come close to lineing up, and the water pump pulley is also closer to the timing case. Now can anyone tell me for sure if the balancer has slipped out ? and how far from the timing case should it sit, mine looks to have slipped out almost 5mm doesn't look right at all. |

that last pic is a little blury, but that balancer might have slipped out????
A good bolt to use to put them back in, is a bommodore front strut bolt, they are the same thread size. Here's a pic of one.

looking at that the rubber and pulley on mine has deffinately slipped right out. :S I might look at getting a powerbond balancer, i'd like to replace it anyway as most of the pulleys and stuff on the car are like new. Thanks again.

Hi I know this is a really old topic.. but I have just joined and having similar issues. I have an AUII and an EL. Looking at the pics.. seen damo's pic with 5mm on it and then cjh's pic of a decent one. because its blurry its a pic hard to see but im trying to figure where this is compared to a good one.
My EL is really bad... only half the pully and half the tensioner one also. I have the same problem with the belt rubbing and wearing into the metal too :/ Was this issue fixed by new pullies or pullies and harmonic balancer?? I also need a new timing chain in the EL (or adjusted?) I run dual fuel on both but predominatly lpg. Many thanks... for a chick i think i kinda do ok in getting my head around an engine bay... thank F for this place bcuz i knew sfa before i found you all!! much love HAHA |

I had the same problems last week on my XH. Last Monday i replaced the harmonic balancer and it's now fixed. Cost me 260 done by the local RACQ workshop. My wife works there and I couldn't be stuffed
