Not hard.
Remove the cover around the steering column (a few plastic screws ont he undside) Hammer and punch to remove the sheer-head bolts insert the key, and (from memory) theres a little hole which you can poke something in, and the barrel will pop out. You may want to purchase new sheer-head bolts from Ford, or you can always re-use the old ones. Afterwards you will need to let the BEM re-learn the new ign module. You will need to leave the key in the ON position for approx 30-60 minutes. Once its complete you will hear the central locking cycle once.

Oh, youre just changing the barrel, not the ign module?

Fair enough. I read your original question wrong
Let me try again: Not hard. Remove the cover around the steering column (a few plastic screws ont he undside) insert the key, and (from memory) theres a little hole which you can poke something in, and the barrel will pop out. Insert new barrel - voila!

I am going to do the same with my EF. The key is real loose and after starting i have to make sure the key fully turns back otherwise the accessories will not work - eg radio, power windows, fan buttons. How much you paying for your ingition barrel? Are you sure this is the problem? Does it not turn over or does nothing happen?

I have a similar problem in my EF also. I just have to hit the steering wheel to get the engine to crank sometimes
I'd put it down to the actual ignition switch, not the barrel (hence the confusion in my original post)

I do the same thing. I gave the car to the auto electrician for 2 days and it started first time with no dramas. He called me up and told me he could not fault it. THen i went to start it at his place and it did nothing. Bang it under the dash and it starts no worries. Anyway he had another look at it and reckons there is a loose wire in the smart lock module? and it has nothing to do with the key barrel.

doesnt smartlock cut fuel pulses, rather than ignition?? that was the impression i was under but certainley could be wrong.

But it could be a loose wire to/from the starter relay

Your probably right - the auto elect did not seem to good - that why i am still banging under the dash rather than getting him to fix it. I will replace barrel anyway and see how that goes.
Anyone know how much these are new? |

Smartlock actually cuts the ECU - or more precisely the ECU stops doing anything usefull if it doesnt get smartlock pulses.

im confused... if it cuts the whole ECU, why will the engine still crank over? im guessing the starter motor is independant of the ECU, but does this mean that it also cuts spark as well as fuel pulses?? therefore meaning the engine is being solely turned by the starter motor, without spark or fuel. i think i may have just answered my own question
