ok, yesterday gave the engine a bit of a degreasing. after which i went for a drive, all was sweet, car was then sitting for about 20 mins, started it again, and the volts went upto 14.8ish on the guage. and the battery light was flashing on and off, and it eventually went away after about 5 mins.
this morning went to goto work, the volts went upto 15v on the guage and then drop[ped to 14.8 and just sat there with the battery light on, had to get to work so i just drove it, work is only 5 mins anyway. now, after i have been driving i turned the car on, then bought it back to the KOEOff. so key in the on position, with warning lights on. and the volts start at arouind 13ish, then drop back to about 11.8. whats the issue here? voltage regulator? knocked something degreasing? got something where it shouldnt be? Cheers.

check the 2-pin plug to see it isn't full with water.
have you put a multimeter across the battery to see what voltage it's getting? the light may have come on because some crap got into the alternator. my old fairmont did this and im an auto elec and i drove it for 6 months and it never failed. but it could possibly be your alternator, you'll have to at least check it with a multimeter and keep an eye out for the battery light.

ok update.
today i pulled the battery out, cleaned up the terminals, checked all the earth points etc. pulled the plugs out of the alt and gave em all a wd40 spraying. cause i was bored pulled the thermos and changed the belt cause it looked a little tired, killed all the battery tray rust and painted it. put it all back togeather, battery light was off. you beauty! then went to go for a drive later on today, the f**k came back on SPEWING! 15 mins into the drive the light started flickering before going off. awesome, it might be ok. drive later tonight, the lights back on, you f**k C***. so is it possible there is nothing wrong with the ALT/BAT and there is jsut a s**t connection somewhere for the battery guage? the volts according to the guage are sitting between 13.8 and 14.4, occasionally creeping up towards 14.8. but mainly 13.8 to 14.4 any more ideaS?

If it's still getting some charge, it should be ok to drive. Put the charger on it overnight if you're worried.
Alternators are pretty easy to pull apart and you could try replacing the brushes yourself. |

And that assuming that the slip ring dosen't need replacing

if it's a bosch, there's a black box on the back. replace it is a quick fix.
mitsubishi alternators are a bit more harder. what fordz says is pretty spot on if your gonna give it a full service.

I did my AU mitsubishi alternator, and the only tricky bit was the getting the brushes to hold back when putting it back together. Are the EF one's different by any chance? |

just saw the auto elec today.
he said hes surprised its still charging. he thinks when i was washing some gunk and water got washed into the alt and probably shorted out the warning circuit. maybe some of the brushes to, but he said as its still puttin out full voltage its seems to be working ok. said it might die some time, but as long as its puttin out 12.5 - 15v just ignore the light, if the voltages get funky, then its time re replace it. now, weres that tape to stick over the light.
