hi guys. was driving around this morning and the battery gauge read only 10-11v if that then stopped at the ford to ask about the au engines but they werent open then left,
had to then jump start the car to go to the street, finished up there, went to the golo to see what they had then went to start the car to home to have lunch wouldnt start, even had to jumpstart it there, wouldnt jumpstart either, and on the way to golo the disk player cut in and out and the abs light came on and off on the way to golo and left the car there for the mechanic uncle to look at it. would it be the alternator as one of the belts were squeeking then today the battery gauge only read 10-11v no matter on revs. however this morning it came good twice then went back to 10-11v. also i just had the aircon regased so wondering if its the alternator should buy the cheapest 2nd hand ed alternator then convert to the 1 belt when the head gets done or should i spend more on the ed alternator and know it works properly. |

alternators are pretty tempremental.. you can buy a brand new one and it could last forever, or die very quickly.. they're the most unreliable part of an engine..
You're better off buying new as the bushes are new, and there's less chance of it packing up in the short term.. Where as an older one has probably already seen it's best days, so unless you can get a second hand one REALLY cheap, it's not worth it in my opinion..

its a ed 4.0L and the top cover had a oil leek and sometimes it leeks abit of oil under the head closer to the harmonic balancer.
the case for the alternator was covered in oil when i gave the front of the engine a degrease at my uncles place |

if the red battery light turns on at random times and your lights go dull its most probably the alternator also if you alternator gauge seems to jump around a bit

it sounds like the alternator is stuffed..
and the alternators dont like oil.. or being degreased..usually they will fail soon after they have been degreased because of oil leaks.... |

car is going its not the alternator the squeel is comming from the intake, putting the original fan back on as the thermo fans are drawing too much power and not working properly and at one stage had the ac on idling too long without knowing that flattened it.
so have to save up for the project ed fairmont later on and do everything to that |

so have to save up for the project ed fairmont later on and do everything to that your battery shouldnt go flat with the thermo fans on...they do draw alot of power but they shouldnt send the battery flat... there are heaps of people who run thermo fans with the std alternator with no problems.. either your battery is about stuffed or your alternator is close to it.... with the thermo fans off you should be getting atleast 14v from the alternator.. |
