Did a search and can't believe this hasn't been done before.

What fluid do you use to top up your battery if the fluid is low in the cells?

Car has trouble starting due to low battery and I checked the levels and they are damn low.

So what is the fluid you use?

If someone says tap water I'll hit you.

pretty sure thats the end of your battery..same thing happend to mine and i topped it up and it died 4 weeks later. As soon as the cold weather comes is when most battery's give up for some reason.

but yeh its demineralized water (same s**t u put in clothes irons). You can also put acid in (hydrochloric) but i don't think you will be able to buy it from anywhere

Ah so best get a new battery. Damn. Car is for sale too. Didn't want to have to spend any money on her.

I thought it was demineralised water but wasn't too sure. I heard someone say it at Auto One and then someone said to them something else instead (probably HCI).

Thanks for clearing that up.

Top it up and charge the battery - check it with a hydrometer, which can be bought for around $10.
What you're doing is checking the 'specific gravity' of the electrolyte, which is sulphuric acid (H2SO4).
DO NOT, add hydrochloric acid (HCI) - in fact, never mix acids - I've seen people with facial injuries due to this, including mixing acid and water the wrong way.
You may find the battery is still okay - how old is it ?

batteries dont seem to last like they used to. I get about 2-3 years now if i am lucky. I wonder if my alternator is faulty. you should check the levels regularly.

The battery is at least 4 or 5 years old. Its been in the car since I bought it.

Sulphuric Acid hey. Is it still OK to add demineralised water or not?

true dat, ive seen it happen at my school chem lab with 20mL of acid into another 20mL of a different acid. that reaction was scary enough - imagine pouring 5M HCI into a battery full of H2SO4?

the dimineralised water will be fine , all your doing is diluting it down, so pretty mu ch it will get your level up, but the battery will turn to s**t eventully
you can get a battery for your car from supercheap for $60 dollars but thats the cheapest 1 i think

you dont need to add acid to a battery, just top it up with water and it will be fine... how long since you last checked the fluid? if its lost fluid in a short amount of time <6 months then it could be the alternator overcharging and boiling the battery dry...

I've never checked the fluid until recently when the car was hard to start.
