I found that the power steering pump was leaking from the high pressure line, and the oil was dripping down onto the alternator.
No the battery light is on when the ignition is off, but isnt always on when the car is running.
I have degreased the power steering pump and everything below, fixed the leak (nut was loose) and the alternator is dry, but still not charging the battery.
At idle the volts are around 11.5, and they dont increase with revs.

So my questions are
-how do I check the alternator?
-where are the diodes?
-how much are reco'd alternators worth?

If you split the alternator in 1/2 you will see the carbon dust has turned into a grinding paste due to the oil. The slip rings will probably have nice 5mm channels in them. This is a common problem. If you clean out all the oily paste the alternator will most likely work again (did for me). The oily paste is a great insulator. When you reassemble push a thin rod like a paper clip into the small holes to keep the brushes held back and it'll come together easy.

Reco alternator should cost less than $200. I get them for $150.

yeh, my battery light is playing silly buggers. its been on for a few days (only when cars running) then it randomally went off while driving, except my volts are ok. still get 12.5-15v.

when i got a day where i dont need car i might pull it alt apart and take a look.

I sorted it out, the oil had shorted out something in the regulator and it melted.
Replaced the regulator and all is fine
