hey all,
My EA wich i drive occasionally gets really bad corrosion on the terminals which in turn leads to s**t contact and the voltmetre goes all over the shop even when applying the brakes and such. Whats the best solution? i was thinking cleaning the terminals and wires and then coating them with grease to stop it from building back up again? thanx Tim.

there is a special conductive grease you can use but I dunno what it is called ... I just tackle mine with some hot water out of my kettle every now and then!!

you're still talking about battery terminals right?

blackjack's got it right. But here's one tip to cleaning them. First go over them with a wire brush to get rid of the bulk of the oxide. Then follow it up with some warm water with some soda bicarb, then gloss em up with emery paper. Then coat em in any grease, that 'conductive grease' is a worthless gimmick.
First port of call would be the regulator. Then the above. |

also make sure that your connections are really tight, if its loose and rattles round it can also cause oxidation

So yeah, check your regulator.
sorry if this is a stupid question but where is the regulator? thanx

First port of call would be the regulator. Then the above. exactly. my ute did it within days, so out came the wire brush, warm water with bi-carb soda mix, a bit of a scuff with emery paper, and a smear of grease, and haven't seen anything since.

the regulator is the device that ensures that the voltage recievied by the battery from the altenator is at a steady rate and magnitude. It's the balck box on the alternator. If that's not working, you risk some serious problems via running electrical equipment under power (and making them labour) or even worse, a complete power surge, and that could blow the electrics in the car.
Also, like was stated before, make sure the terminals are tightly butted against the slugs. |
