thought I would start a new thread:
originally posted by: Joesau Fordmods - Smokin em u PostPosted: Yesterday at 7:20 pm Post subject: Reply with quote the BBm should close all the way, when it opens to WOT the valves do not fully open, they open about 85% u can adjust this i have and is proven for a increase in power, I just went out and checked and your right, I manually moved the lever that controls the butterfly assembly and they only open at about 85%. All you need to do is bend up the metal tab plate up on the BBM so the shaft goes further back (when there is no vacuum, that's when the butterflies are open for the short runners after 3800rpm) Before I do this is there any reason why ford only opened them by 85% and why there is an adjuster there to start with? What sort of gains am I expecting. haven't heard of this mod before? Also drive around with the vacuum disconnected so the short runners are open and yeah down low is a bit slow and at switch point it comes on like boost.. But not as effective as long runners to 3800rpm then switch to short runners.

It got the better of me, so i adjusted the BBM lever. probably only got another 5-10% more travel. So the factory setting was pretty spot on.
Took it for a spin and could notice a little bit more of a surge when the BBM switches. Might have gained 1-5HP. Ford probably backed it off a tad for a smoother acceleration feel when the revs pass the 3800rpm switching point. Cheers...

Here is a photo, just took the car out on the highway, it has made a noticeable improvement above 3800rpm.

is that going to change the point at which the butterfly opens? or wont it matter

No it will not effect switch point. Basically at idle there is vacuum present which closes the manifold butterfly control diaphragm (Short runners are closed). The ECU then cuts vacuum at 3800rpm via the BBM switch valve that is located behind the windscreen fluid bottle and thus the butterfly valves open on the shorter runner improving top end performance. pic

Lol, that's pure gold. When they are fully open they are at a slight angle (my BBM is off the car atm) but I've got a feeling they are open for maxium effect with the direction of the incomoing air, but not sure. I can't resist so I'll probably adjust them to fully open. I also cut the shaft that holds the valves' it's in 2 pieces and the valve slots between, I left the side with the thread for the screw. I also got the valves onto the bench grinder and halved the width. Just looking at it the ports have quite a bit more free space now, i think it will prove effective for some minor herbs.

what did you do? i dont really understand what youve done, but i cant imagine any gains being made by cutting into the shaft |

I probably wouldn't have thinned the shaft that way, IMO it may have weakened the shaft too much, if the shaft lets go then you could end up with BBM blades/valves loose in the intake and possibly in your engine, Jamming your valves and stuffing your head.

There's no chance of it breaking it's very strong material and the screw thread is retained. Though must say it's alot of labour for what I think would be a small gain, hoping to gain a little bit by doing this along with cutting the gasket to size which is pretty rough and fully opening the valves. Cheers I hand the thread back to it's owner after my little hi-jack, lol. |
